Why can't I swing my sword underwater?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:56 pm

The title says it, but here's a link to a similar thread that explains what I mean: http://www.gamesas.com/combat-underwater-t220575.html

Edit: Or sprint and jump for that matter. Whats with the one second day between sprinting and jumping?

Ahahaha, I hope you know the "Game Skyrim" forum is a mirror forum of this one, it uses all of our posts and puts them under random names and avatars.

Anyway, I'd imagine it'd be pretty hard to effectively swing a sword underwater... Too much force against you to gain any momentum.

I believe what you are reffering to is called physics. Good luck jumping underwater in real life.

Yes, but there must be some way of defending oneself in the water. I'd imagine you could still stab someone, or punch a slaughterfish. You're the dovakhiin for goodness sake

Seemed fine in the other games. IE MW and OB. Everyone knows it isn't realistic, but fighting the giant slaughterfish in OB was fun.

That would be true, if you actually needed to defend yourself from something underwater. As hostile as Skyrim might be, its waters are rather tame.

I'm dovahkiin but my Thu'um can't penetrate a Steadfast Ward... Great [censored] ability... I don't want underwater combat, I just want to shout a mage apart.

Yet another step down in my opinion. There were underwater dungeons in oblivion. I miss those. Haven't seen anything interesting in the waters of skyrim. But the slaughterfish are still annoying. Why cant we just stab them?

No...there should not be any unrealistic physics put in the game. Me and alot of fans wouldn't like that. You can't swing a sword or speak underwater. Frankly, the underwater is pretty much everyone's weakness because it take away too much of what you are capable of. You may be dovakhiin but you are not superman...

The other games had underwater combat. Pre-Oblivion, there was a waterwalking spell. Oblivion had jumping while in water as a perk for mastering acrobatics. I don't bother with the water in Daggerfall yet, so can't say much about that one. I'll be in a boat... Not singing I'm On a Boat. Nope... I will sing it anyways.

How is combat underwater anymore unrealistic than riding a dragon to someplace? How about riding a horse and the horse being able to scale ledges? Let's not forget the fact that realism shouldn't make something taboo. If amphibious, tree born, lizard people are okay and a horse being able to scale more than one ledge is okay, then I don't know how making swords and weapons weaker when used underwater would be so unrealistic.

Cloak spells still work. You have to cast them on land, but they stay active while you swim around, and kill anything that gets too close.

Overall though, I don't see why they dropped that mechanic. So what if it's not realistic? Neither are multiton flying reptiles, or throwing flames from my hands. It's just plain annoying that there are things in the water that can attack you, and you have no reasonable way of fighting back.

I'm pretty sure you can still stab someone underwater, or punch them. It's more unrealistic that all you can do is stare at your enemy when you're both underwater.

Yes but I see the other sides' point: most of the laws of physics still apply on Nirn unless magic is involved. Still, irl you can punch and stab underwater. You shouldn't be defenseless.
