Expansion or add-on.

Is it right to call Dawnguard an expansion? Or is it just an add-on? Or are they considered sometimes to be the same thing? I'm just curious because that might give us an indication as to the size of the DLC. If I remember correctly, Point Lookout for Fallout 3 was an expansion and that was probably a 4th of the size of the main map/play area.

Nobody here is for sure on what exactly it is: I for one am hoping its a proper expansion pack we was told we get two or three things that would be closer to an expansion pack instead of DLC.

There seems to be a distinction between the two. I'm not certain, but I believe an expansion must expand the main land while adding quests, characters, etc to the mainland. Therefore, it may not be correct to say Point Lookout was an expansion, because it added a small area that does not affect the Capital Wasteland. On the other hand, it seems appropriate to call any add-on an expansion if it is large enough, regardless of connection to the MQ and mainland, which is why some call Shivering Isles an expansion.

The terms are largely interchangeable, though.

Bethesda has been working on this for a long while and i have a lot of faith that they won't disapoint. I think they'll make it worth the 20 dollar pricetag

Shivering Isles was definitely an expansion. Knights of the Nine, add-on. I would argue Point Lookout was an expansion for Fallout 3.

Its an add-on. A short add-on for Skyrim. What? You thought adding Vampires was an Expansion? .. ..
