I just installed Skyrim but I do not know how to start the game . I was expecting an icon similar to Oblivian or MarrowWind but all I have is a Steam icon and no game listed in programs . Would someone please enlighten me ?

try loading up steam and looking in your list of games maybe?

It really should have added an Icon to your desktop, sure it installed properly?

Look in steam and if its not there maybe you should reinstall it.

Thank you . I did not understand the new protocol . Steam is now downloading SkyRim . Another question does this mean I cannot play SkyRim if I do not have an internet connection ?

If you play it once through Steam with an internet connection, you can then switch to "offline mode" and play offline. I'm not sure about the exact date range, but if you go online every other week and log into Steam, you can play offline in-between for months.

Go to program files and search Steam or Elderscrolls V or Skyrim ETC. Then run the file directly from there? That's my best guess.

It's downloading patches. Wait until it's done and you should be able to play.

Once it's finished, if you right click on it in your Steam Library, you have an option to create a desktop icon.

I didnt have internet for a few weeks and despite the fact that I thought I had it set to offline mode, I still could'nt play until I got Internet back......but maybe I really did'nt have it set to offline mode, either way if you lose internet connection and it is not set IN ADVANCE to offline mode, you will not be able to play

There is a way to install it directly from disk with a bit of finagling, however I'm sure you still have to go online at least once to get it properly set up in Steam. And when you do it's gonna spend however long it takes downloading all the patches anyway.

That said, the only time I go online with Steam is when a new patch comes out and I'm ready to d/l and install it. Otherwise I am always in offline mode and AFAIK it's never required me to go back online for any reason, and that's in six months of playing at least a little almost every day.
