My thoughts on the dawnguard trailer

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:21 pm

So as you guys well know the dawnguard trailer has released and now everyone including me is like super-hyped about it. I mean really I was logging on to the forums page one day and I thought I was going to skip through the elder scrolls online game but when it said "dawnguard trailer" I was like Omfg!!! I could not stop...watching that crazy trailer I mean it looks so damn amazing!! The new vampires, vampire LORDS, and most of all...motherfreakin CROSSBOWS!!!! I am very much looking forward to what this dlc has to offer because its clearly going to be something BIG. Now I know that for some weird "astronomical" reason some people are not excited about it. How could they not be? I mean everything in the trailer just looks so cool I mean I thought elder scrolls dlc would be enough to get anyone excited so I hope that reading through my thoughts on the trailer maybe will change a few likable minds out there.

So I have been looking on the internet nonstop for alot of dawnguard info since that trailer came out and I came across a good video anolysis. Its 30 min long atleast so if you have the time please check out the video below and see what this gentleman has to say. He brings out some really good points that most other anolysis trailers haven't before so check it out and tell me what you think. You can read my thoughts also if you wish and if anything strikes out as interesting to you please comment.

My thoughts on the trailer. Read if you wish and discuss!

I talk here about various parts of the dawnguard trailer so feel free to skip ahead to other paragraphs if you wish. Its pretty much straightforward text for the sake of keeping the text as limited as possible so enjoy!

My thoughts on this trailer are many. For starters, it seems at the beginning you have to find the vampires first before you get into anything big. It opens up into a view of the vampiric castle now one thing I did notice in the video were the 2 gargoyle statues at the bridge. Im guessing they are statues of the winged vampire lords as was stated in the video I posted now I know there is no evidence of this but I do wonder if they could be bringing in gargoyles into the game. They are related to Dracula and Castlevania (you have to fight them at some point) but Idk I mean if you actually do get to fight stone gargoyles that would be bloody awesome.

So now it takes us to the inside of the vampire castle. The first thing I noticed was the elder scroll on that womans back whom I am assuming is that guys daughter. Im surprised that yet "another" elder scroll is being brought into the game. I know they are very very rare to find but I suppose it ties in with the plot to block out the sun. Also that guy whom I am assuming is a vampire lord has the same bright glowing eyes as the picture we saw earlier so most likely we will be seeing some new breed of vampire. Maybe the Volikhar we have all been waiting for? I can picture my character with those eyes omg he will look so badass. One thing that concerns me though is when you walk in public with those eyes. Most likely, you will be labeled a vampire so this right here is probably evidence that you can really block out the sun in the game. Not sure how but really just a hunch. Next thing I noticed was that he also had a cape so maybe we could be seeing the use of capes or cloaks in the game which is really cool. Or it could be part of his armor design like the nightingale armor but we shall see.

Now as the trailer goes on it shows you turning into a vampire lord. This is just astonishing the detail bethesda has put into this. All the redness and blood everywhere really brings out to the fact that you can indeed become a vampire lord and side with the vampires. The transformation still; you can't get over at how epic it looks!! Next we notice the vampire lord standing next to what looks like a blood fountain. Now if I am correct it looks like a depiction of Molag bal. I could be wrong but the face looks similar to him and the fountain looks similar to the fountain in the house in Markarth where you find that hidden altar with the Mace of Molag bal hanging over it.

Next it looks like vampire lords will be able to use Sonar just like bats do or batman from the movies. Because if you pause it you notice how it reveals an individual nearby with a glowing hue just like detect life so possible Sonar ability for vampire lords. Next is a nord sinking his fangs into some unlucky fool. This is what I have been waiting for finally!! You can now feed without them having to sleep. I'm hoping this gets used in conjunction with sneak attack because as you see he is not in sneak mode. He just walks up, grabs him and feeds so no sublety to be found when feeding in that fashion. Next you chance upon what looks like a giant, glowing-blue portal that apparently leads to the realm of the dead. As you venture in you notice a vampire lord flying with wings just like Marcus from Underworld. Looks really well done and beautiful so either possible gliding on the ground or flying in the air.

Next we see the dawnguard (the pathetic vampire hunters whom I will enjoy slaying!!). The castle though looks really cool; it looks like its built to house many archers and too withstand attacks from many enemies so I look forward to exploring that. If you look on the inside of it you will see their flag next to the fireplace which I am assuming is their symbol. The hallway looks like it takes a while to get to the otherside so probably the dawnguard will have really big cities to explore. Next up, you see....CROSSBOWS!!! Gods Im so glad they're bringing crossbows back! It looks fantastic too and I love the way you reload. I was honestly expecting the loading to be alot slower because crossbows in rl do take a while to reload but provide a great impact.

As the trailer continues this vampire lord pops out of the wall. If you notice a few differences he clearly looks alot fiercier than the previous vampire lord. He has actuall wings because you notice he has some flesh right below the wingy part or below the bony part whatever. Also he looks alot muscular so maybe as you progress through the quest you will be able to see your vampire lord appearance get stronger. Probably through the ability of eating souls in the realm of the dead. Next, you notice that big ice giant. If you played Bloodmoon it looks remarkably similar too Karstaag. But still it wields the same club as a giant and wears clothing like one so maybe these are actual ice giants. Who knows but maybe we will actually be returning to Solsthiem. Thats just theory in speculation but it is a possibility.

Next it looks like vampires will be able to turn into bats which is pretty interesting. I dont know if thats an ability we will be getting as vampire lords but if we do I'm curious as to how it will be implemented in gameplay. As the trailer continues it shows a vampire lord using what looks like his version of absorb health. You use a telekinetic ability that literally picks up the guy and possibly absorbs his health judging by the way he glows red. Next up it looks like you get access to cooler mounts!! Sorry Shadowmere but it looks like your time has come. Your riding what looks like an undead horse covered in blue flame which looks really cool so access to new and improved mounts is confirmed!! Next which is very curious...a dragon crashing into a frozen lake. Now this could be part of a boss fight or something but as I recall the Volikihar live in the ice so maybe this is how you gain access to their realm possibly.

After that you see what clearly looks like a map of the entire dlc. Mainly because if you pause and study it you see what looks like mountains and a river in the middle. And the 2 symbols most likely are where the dawnguard and vampires are located so possibly a similar Civil war questline may be had here. Lastly, you see Dovakiin walking up to what looks like dragons reach except that it looks ruined in this video. So maybe you destroy dragons reach? Also you see the sun turning red and covering Skyrim in this large and dark cloud of abyss. Very interesting, so it looks like you literally will be able to clog up the sun after all and allow vampires to roam free. I still dont believe it because usually in these kind of stories you end up killing the "bad guy" that you decided to help in the first place. And he tries to kill you because you had served your purpose in serving him but we just have to wait and see until the dlc comes out.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed my thoughts on the dawnguard trailer. Please comment and tell me what you think!! For the vampires!!

It's a Gargoyle. If you ever played TES II: Daggerfall, you'd immediately recognize that as a Gargoyle. http://www.uesp.net/dagger/monsters/dfmonst.shtml

The reason I'm not excited for Dawnguard is because I consider Vampire Lords to be RETCON at this point, and I'm usually skeptical about DLC in general. DLC is a far cry from an Expansion and that is what I'm looking for when I buy more content for a game. I think Vampire Lords are RETCON because winged Vampires have never been mentioned or appeared in TES before and Vampires have been relatively consistent in the series. Also, I found the bat-like aspects of these Vampires to be more or less cliché.

Vampires are and have been many things but 'batty' is new to me. Underworld much? Vampire lore is rich in TES so there is indeed and truly no need to draw from other sources. The 'transforming into a cloud of bats' thing doesn't play with me. Shapeshifting in TES lore is very rare and possibly very dangerous. I did notice the Frost Giant, it did look like Karstaag. From a lore perspective I am in no way thrilled at this point but I will reserve complete condemnation or praise until release.

Oh come on. When you start playing the dlc you will love it. Trust me.

Trailer looks good. I like the crossbow addition! Hope they'll implement new perks into the archery skill tree instead of making a whole new skill, 'cause then I have to start over my archer just to try crossbows.

My thoughts are perhaps Bethesda has infiltrated my mind and stole my thoughts to use as their own profit. I distinctly remember thinking of what seems to be the plot for Dawnguard, one fine December day whilst taking a poop.

Exactly.

On a serious note, I'm looking forward to an emphasis on vampirism. I always thought vampires were overlooked too often in the TES series. Particularily when it came to any sort of vampiric storyline.
