Is it possible to play with controller and keyboard at the s

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 9:44 am

Hi! So, I decided I prefer to play Skyrim with a Xbox360 controller, so I bought that receiver you need to use it. But it'll take a month to arrive, so I ask this in the meantime: Is it possible to use both the controller and the keyboard at the same time? For example, to use the eight quick access buttons, or if I wish to use the mouse for a moment to do a high precision shot.

What receiver? I simply plugged my xbox 360 controller into the usb slot on my pc and that was all that was needed to play Skyrim using it. The game automatically detects the controller, and has an options toggle specifically for the xbox 360 controller.

Unfortunately, they keys seem to be deactivated when using a controller, aside from taking screenshots.

He probably has a wireless controller.

As for the question, I know that the quicksave function still works if you're using the controller.

I think he's talking about a wireless controller. You need a receiver for that. edit: ninja'd :ninja:

You can't use the mouse once you have the controller on, except for the time when the developer console ( opened with ~ ) is on. That still works.
Also, renaming enchanted items enables the keyboard too.
The hotkeys are gone, you'll only have the default 2 on the d-pad, but there are mods to expand the number of hotkeys on the controller.

I've never used any kind of gamepad before but I am curious: does it have to be some special, officially labelled 'xbox360' type of gamepad, or will any kind of device do the job?

I don't know why a wireless controller never crossed my mind. I'm so used to using wired controllers as I hate charging them or replacing the batteries.

I'm not sure, but Skyrim was made with the Xbox 360 in mind, and controller support with the pc version is flawless. The button layout is the same, along with controller vibration. Other controllers may be compatible, though why risk it, unless you already have a pc controller?

Im just curious, especially since with a keyboard, you can only walk and run (and by almost breaking your fingers, also sprint). With a gamepad, you'd have everything in between.
However, I'm still sceptical how aiming is going to get close to using a mouse but I really start to dislike using the keyboard for walking.

Because I get smoother movement (the mouse is very jerky for me, for some reason), because the transitions from walk-run-walk are smoother too, because I can trot my horse, because I can enjoy all the benefits my PC offers while laying lazily on my couch in front of my TV. This is why I use it.

Yes, you do get all the movements in-between. You can walk really slow or really fast, like some NPC's do and you have to run-walk-run to keep up with them. This works for the horse too, you can walk him really slow, trot him (not available on keyboard unless using mods) canter slower or faster (not talking about sprinting), etc.

You get used to the aiming, trust me. Sure it will never be as accurate as a mouse (for me at least) but, hey, I svck at aiming and I still managed to play an Archer easily.

I wish there were a mod that used the mouse wheel to change movement speed, like the splinter cell games. Sometimes, running is too fast and walking is too slow.

Yes to all of this. The movement is far better with an anolog stick(s). The aiming is a drawback, but that is minor for me as well. Plus you get the rumble pak action going on. That alone has scared me out of my skin. (stepping on bones while sneaking)

With that mod it increases your Hot Keys from 2 to 8 and allows quick access to map functions as well as a Quick Save.

EDIT : Besides the K&M kills my wrist after 30 min of gameplay. With the controller I can play for days on end.

Thanks for all the answers! Yes, I was reffering to a wireless gamepad :D. My main worry was to use the eight quick access slots, but thanks to that mod Se?or Cinco said, it seems I won't have any problems ^o^

Now my main worry is: Will the "non-official" Xbox360 receiver work well with Windows 7 64 bits? Even if the official Microsoft receiver does not support 64 bits, people makes it work easily. I hope it's the same for the non official versions.
