Bethesoft: pay attention to the DG shapeshifts

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 8:21 am

We have all seen the new vampire form. But is this shapeshift really affected by 'genotype', like race or facial shape, at al?

I was happy regular vampirism in Skyrim was working a bit more like in Morrowind again, in that each race looked distinct when turned vampire. Oblivion was different. FaceGen was introduced and the facial features were copied after the PC had become a vampire. The beast races however were completely shortchanged. Upon becoming vampires, they would get humanoid vampire facial presets, including red humanoid eyes and skin tones and lacking any special teeth. They would look completely ridiculous.

So far it seems like Skyrim has done these things right again. Yet it is worrying however to see that all footage of this new shape shift looks http://www.cinemablend.com/images/gallery/s43284/Skyrim_Dawnguard_Screenshots_13389551923641.jpg. I'm sure some people will argue this is exactly the point of shifting shape, to become something distinctly different - like a werewolf.

To hell with that. Contrary to the werewolf, the new vampire form already seems to have some very distinct humanoid features. It doesn't look wholly alien to the existing races. It could very well be much more than just a minor aesthetic mismatch to what you are actually playing. More importantly, on the not-so-long run, undynamic content like this will become boring, perhaps tedious. You could play all of Skyrim with as many distinct characters as you like, yet that part of Dawnguard will always look and feel the same.

What I want to yell out to the guys in charge:
Be careful! Skyrim undid some of the mistakes made with Oblivion! Don't fall for it again with this DLC..

You turn into a creature/monster. I don't think we will see our base character's appearance show in the vampire lord's facial features. Though I hope I will be proven wrong.

On the bright side. There will be gender specific shapes for the vampire lord though.

That I can pretty much guarantee will happen anyway. I think it's essential to get the basics done right though.

According to http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1379550-so-about-these-tranformations/page__view__findpost__p__20895748 the females have a different model. I'm guessing more curvy with a bra.

'Stick a bra on it', heh. Bit of a cop-out, but I can deal with that.
