Hunting Down Remaining Soldiers

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 1:42 pm

So after finishing the Civil War quest, I'm told to hunt down and kill any remaining camps that I find. However, when I do find enemy camps and kill everybody, the only person that will not die is the General of the camp! They just fall to the ground on their knees like they are stunned, stay down for a few seconds, and then get back up and attack me again. Is anybody else having this problem as well? Did I miss something? I'm playing on the xbox by the way.

They're still marked as an essential NPC, for some reason. I usually just leave them there. Nobody will ever know.

Ok. When It first happened, I was like "Why won't you die?!?!?!?" It really frustrated me. Hopefully they fix it.

No don't worry, you're not the only one man. For some unknown reason these characters are marked as "essential," which means they cannot be killed. Other essential characters are Jarls and people in the main quest (Greybeards, Delphine, Esbern, etc.).

The most plausible explanation I've seen is that at one point the CW storyline was going to have a bunch of side quests that would be given out by the camp commanders, just like the radiant quests for all the other factions. So they were originally made essential for that reason. Then the radiant quest part was scrapped but the essential tags didn't get removed. So, probably just an unfortunate oversight.

I've sorta been hoping that they were meant to survive in order to play some part in a DLC that would expand the CW storyline beyond what can happen in the game as is, but that's probably wishful thinking. Especially since you're told to go wipe out the camps, seems more likely that it was in fact an oversight. If there's a CW-related expansion I'm guessing only the really important surviving NPCs will have any part an it, the minor characters will probably all be new.
