For some reason he acts like a guard I think, so it must mean you have a bounty in Whiterun and he must be your follower so you can't ask him to return home. If you get rid of your bounty he should stop attacking you.

Some members of the Companions are tagged as guards, meaning if they think you have an outstanding bounty they will go aggro on you.

There is a bug whereby you get slapped with some kind of "hidden" bounty that the city guards don't acknowledge, but the other "law enforcement" factions in the area react to - the Companions, for instance, or members of the Jarl's court. SInce the guards don't acknowledge it, they don't give you the dialogue option to pay it, and then you're stuck with these other people treating you like a wanted criminal.

Simplest solution is to commit some small crime where a city guard can witness it. Make sure you have enough gold on you to pay it off. When the guard catches you and gives you the option to do that, take it. That should clear your *entire* bounty in the hold, including the one that doesn't exist for the guards but exists for everybody else.

I usually just go up and try to pickpocket a guard and get caught redhanded. If your skill there is too high for you to get caught easily, just blatantly steal some cheap item right in front of them without being in sneak mode.

Or just punch someone and pay the 40 gold fine.

That'll work. It's also a nice option if there's someone around you want to punch anyway. If you're in Whiterun, the possibilities are almost endless.

The stupidest thing I think about companion followers,
Spoiler
I had my wife Aela the Huntress following me around. I decided to shift in to the wolf during the Hircine quest for some wolf on wolf action, and Aela starting attacking me.

One, she's my wife.
Two, she's also a werewolf.
Three, I got my werewolf blood from her
Extremely lame.
