I was thinking how are our characters dragonborn if Martin Septim was the last dragonborn and he had no kids (right?) how is there suddenly another dragonborn is it merely explained as a random blessing of akatosh or is the player the descendant of some other dargonborn somehow (I was thinking maybe some farmer was dragonborn and didn't know it)? Any ideas?

in brief.
born with the soul of a dragon. a blessing from the gods, more specificly akatosh...

Or Shezzar. Or Kyne (not likely, but maybe possible; Kyne gave the voice to men, but I wouldn't say that she makes dragonborns).

It's proper form every time this crops up to mention that Mankar could wear the Amulet of Kings. The Septim line weren't the only Dragonborn, just the most widely known. Anyway, returning souls. Who knows the vagaries of the Dreamsleeve?

It is pretty convincing if you think those "chosen/blessed by god" explanations are comprehensive.

But it's the Elder Scrolls universe, all player characters are blessed/chosen by gods in one way or another.

Well when when mummy dragon and father burly nord love each other VERY much...

More seriously though, it is a blessing by ( presumebly ) akatosh. There differnet dragonborns over time, not nessiseraliy of one bloodline.
