Werewolf combat - bad?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 8:46 pm

So this is all pre-Dawnguard, but at the moment, am I the only one that thinks Werewolves really svck in combat?

I ask because I read the occasional thread where people talk about fighting as a werewolf, or playing as one a lot, and even doing well at it.
My problem is that they seem incredibly weak!

I can do a fair bit of damage, that's fair, but the other day I had trouble just taking on three basic bandits. Four arrows from one and I was dead....

Inside, it's impossible as there's no room for manoeuvre, and outside it's just a matter of time really. I find it hard to fight if there's more than about two enemies.

So is this a common experience, or am I doing something really wrong?

Can't wait for that pack howl, bwahahahahahahaha.

As of right now ( pre DLC ) the werewolf form is NOT a tank like everyone seems to think it is, it's really more of a " hit and run " form. All it takes is a little thought before you attack
http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1369690-a-call-to-the-wolfpack/page__fromsearch__1 read my first post, it out lines my hunting tactic which is really useful in confusing the AI allowing for opportunities to strike. I'm able to engage up to 10-12 NPC's in my beast form and I have a 90% chance of succeeding, the remaining 10% is usually because I wasn't paying attention or I got too bold during the attack.
You need to think like a wolf.... a wolves don't out right attack, they stalk their prey and get a grasp on who's the weak and who's the strong. They then separate the two so as to feast on the weak, which is the mind set " new " werewolves should adopt. I as a " senior " werewolf ( been one for over 390hr across 2 toon's ) will retreat from an attack if things are not going my way and you can usually tell very quickly when this is the case all you need to do is use the " fear howl " if it has no effect on your prey then they are over Lv.30 and will go toe to toe with you. All you need to do is think first, if you think you have a chance of besting this Lv.30 toon then have at her.... but you need to have a close eye on how things are panning out and if you feel that you are losing then retreat you are more then able to out run any and all on the map. Or you can put some distance between you and them and just do running " drive by's " until you weaken or kill them.

Not sure if someone has asked this but do you think it's possible they will allow you to become a werewolf again in Dawnguard? I cured myself because I had no use for it and my level and play difficulty made it just about impossible to transform and not die.

I have heard rumors of wild werewolves in the up coming DLC but like I said their only rumors. Fingers crossed though :bunny:

my issues with it were lack of first person camera and lack of any armor rating. The sprinting power attack and howl are good when i used them. Also doesn't beast form stop health regin?

First person while sprinting as a werewolf would give me motion sickness
The armor thing can be solved by taking the Lord stone which adds 50points to your armor rating in human form, which carries over to beast form for 50 points of armor instead of 0. You can also cast armor spells like Dragon hide or ebony flesh before changing, it carries over. Dragonhide for example will give you a 80% damage reduction for 30 seconds, so for 30 seconds you are a bit of a tank , you can also cast cloak spells on top of the armor spells before changing giving added protection while hunting.
As for the health regain, mine does come back but at a much slower rate then when in human form and it seems to almost stop at a certain point which in turn forces you to feed to regain health like your spose to.

I went more a kin to the werewolves of " Underworld " and the Companions, in that I can control when I transform. But to counter this I chose to go extra blood thirsty and I have little to no control as to what I'm doing while in beast form. In other words, I kill anything that moves even if there is a quest tied to what ever / whom ever I kill.

At the start of the game, werewolves are cool but as you progress your human form often becomes more powerful. Werewolves are also pretty useless as you can't use them on quests because you can't pick items up. It'd be cool to be able to use potions at least.

Unless you join the companions at level two transforming offers almost not benefits except maybe being able to run away better. It svcks because I was like "you can become a werewolf! sick!" then two minutes later "wow this is cool but it also svcks".

Yes as of now ( before the new perk tree ) the werewolf form doesn't Lv. with your human form but that will soon change. Why would a werewolf want to pick up items when there's prey to hunt? And as for the potions, there has to be consequences in choosing to become a werewolf and the consequence is that you need to kill and devour humans in order to heal and lengthen your transformation.

Because you took it as a " tank " build, when it's not. It's a hit and run tactic build as of now, but once we get the perk tree all that will change.

You can wear armor as a werewolf. You just need to trade with your follower right when you transform and re-equip your gear.

One of the new perks lets you get twice as much health from feeding, and another adds 100 points added to health and stamina.

That doesn't really help much compared to Damage Reduction. Vanilla Skyrim, you heal for 50 Health when you feed. With "Gorging", you'll heal 100 Health per feed. Without any Armor Rating, opponents can easily hit you for over 100 damage at high levels. Boosting your max health from 650 to 750, only provides a benefit for the time it takes your opponent to damage you 100 points, which like i said, can come from a single hit. Then that extra max health just means you have to feed more to get it back.
Armor Rating however, provides a constant buff against damage, and it scales, unlike Health. If you have 35% Damage Reduction, and a Skeever would hit you for 6 damage, it then becomes 4 damage. If you have 35% Damage Reduction, and a Dragon would hit you for 200 damage, it then becomes 130 damage. 70 Health saved right there in one hit. If the Dragon then hits you again, 140 Health total saved because of Damage Reduction, that right there outdoes the +100 Max Health bonus. That's 140 less hitpoints that you need to heal through feeding. An Ancient Dragon can bite for 300 Damage on Adept. 35% Damage Mitigation would reduce it to 195 damage. That right there trumps the +100 Max Health, with just a single hit. The harder the opponent hits, the more valuable Damage Mitigation becomes compared to raw Health. Damage Mitigation > Health Stacking.

I hope you knew that you can use cloak magic's like muffle, ebonyflesh, and even invisibility in beast form.

Just quickly re-equip your spells before the final transformation or preferably before you even activate beast mode.

Walking slowly while in beast form with muffle equipped can allow you to get really close to enemies for deadly surprise attacks. Don't mind the loud crunching noises your wolf makes. They have no effect on your sneaking.
Though I'm not quite sure if this is simply because I have a very high sneak skill.

It's a lot easier to control Werewolf form on an Xbox controller than it is on a mouse and keyboard.

Also, remember to use the fear shout often. Divide and conquer, but where you divide a crowd up into manageable, defenseless chunks and conquer the chunks.

My Werewolf Crits pretty often so he's fun, but I only use him when i attack a fort with humanoids. Otherwise u take too much damage too fast to do anything. And u have to use the roar or ur screwed. The roar helps so much... at least until u fight the boss who's immune
