The gaming "press" is laughable. The actual role of a true press is to act as a check against other powers and provide for freedom of information. I understand game reviewers aren't necessarily real reporters, but there is potentially quite a story in here. Did Bethesda know about issues with the ps3 version? If not, what is going on with their QA team? are they rushing games out the door without testing them? What are Sony's comments? If they *did* know about the issues, why was the game released? Does this open them up to legal action? a product recall?
I think the game should be recalled, but will Bethesda do it? Of course not, they'll just keep promising patches to fix it, even though it probably never will be. Not with patches at least.
Every story I've seen so far basically says, "We reached out to Bethesda for comment. They didn't respond." Yeah... so your response is to just sit and wait? It's called reporting people, talk to people on and off the record. Do a little digging. Break an actual story. Sigh.
They don't teach you this at journalism school anymore. John Swinton, a writer for the New York Times in the late 1800's put it best when he said this: http://www.constitution.org/pub/swinton_press.htm
If they go after Bethesda too harshly, the next time a big release is coming, Game-trailers will be getting exclusive interviews and/or teasers, while IGN will be sitting in the dark.
it's how the industry works.
Sounds a lot like politics doesn't it? Rub my back and I'll rub yours.
