Skyrim and how it svcks round 2

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:05 am

I did a thread about how much Skyrim combat svcks (you can use search funtion yourself).

A quick list about stuff that was on the earlier thread.

Stuff by me:
  • combat is just mindless hack and slash (not as bad as in oblivion)
  • "pause time, gobble hp potions and win" -healthsystem svcks
  • No real difficulty on harder difficulties (enemies just take more damage and deal more damage but are not smarter, creates a grindy combat)
Stuff by others:
  • I just svck
  • If you like cod go play cod, in skyrim we roleplay
  • combat is fine
Now that the old stuff is dealt with I can start ranting about new stuff and new stuff is called sneaking.

This video tells about sneak in skyrim. Despite its' artistic style it is 100% accurate view on skyrim stealth mechanics.

The problem is again the extremely stupid AI.

Bethesda could easily make things better by:
  • making AI alert when there dead friendlies lying around and when there arrows pointing out of their knees
  • If pc is moving it much easier to detect ( 50% easier sounds reasonable, although in pitch black a master of sneak can move like in vanilla)
  • almost all npc should have torches and they use them when light leves go low enough (also khajiit should use their night eye power when alert)
  • make npcs more awere of their surroundings. No more that
Changes mentioned above make sneaking quite difficult even when pc has 100 sneak so I suggest the following:
  • almost a complete overhaul to the sneak tree (knife part of the current tree is fine but backstabbing should be backstabbing)
- disguise perk (maybe with an upgrade possibility, so that you don't need full suite and can get closer before getting noticed). PC is able to disguise himself as an enemy by wearing faction specific armor/clothes (like in shivering isles, but better)
- A better mastery perk (I had an idead that you could follow creature's/npc's shadow and become completely unnotisable, you pretty much become his shadow although if they turn around and bumb into you you get noticed)
- Thieves arsenal (just google it) + smoke bombs (allow you to make a quick get away assgreed style)
- ability to turn of lights (there is a mod that allows you to remove torches)
- integrating lockpicking into pickpoketing as now it is a compelety useless skill tree and maybe making lockpicking in real time.

You really don't like it do you?
[EDIT] - retrospective to the subsequent comments: what IS the point of this thread? Why make a second thread that as far as I can tell is a basically a platform for you to get your rocks off (again) about why you apparently REALLY hate the game?

It just seems completely pointless.
Just sayin'...

Inb4 go play CoD.

In all honesty though, I see no need for your wording other than to draw attention to the thread. It's not as if it's covering any new points after all...

I think, peeps would be more receptive...MAYBE, and I'm stressing the Maybe since someone whose the exact opposite of you BUT says one negative thing about it would get Flailed. if you changed the tone just a "tad" see this section of the forum is a magnification of the Human trait to pay attention more to how you say it instead of what you're saying and tbh you really aren't stating anything new, its been known for ages now.

and as accurate as that Vid is, it also degrades your appearance to others ;p

offer solutions otherwise its useless and this thread will turn into Sheol.

People who wonder why I play skyrim in the first place. The benefits of skyrim outweight its' cons and there are many things that are improved from earlier bethesda games (fallout 3, oblivion, morrowind...).

EDIT:

The funny thing is that I agree with your criticisms way more often than not, but your tone is irritating so people aren't inclined to give you the time of day.

My two credits.

I agree.

My advice is to get the PC version of the game as mods fix most of these issues.

The day combat, stealth, and overall storytelling is as good in an Open World game as big as Skyrim as in an on the rails hack 'n slash or stealth based game, I'll have died because that kinda game only exists in heaven. Should we be content with what we get? No, we should keep pushing Beth to do better and better. This, I believe, is not how we should do the pushing however.

This is the first video I've watched this morning, and it really set me up for a good day. Thanks, OP.
I disagree that Skyrim svcks, though. I think this game is amazing, but I was also raised on first generation consoles, and remember how games looked and played before today.

"First generation consoles", you mean NES and Sega Megadrive? :hehe: I started before that with Commodore 64, and still say Skyrim leaves a lot to be desired.

I saw that video back when Skyrim was released, and it's still funny because it's true :lmao:

It sounds to me like you'd feel more comfortable playing a game like Dishonored if you want stealth to be more thought out/worked on. TES games have never had amazing combat, it's nothing new. It doesn't make the game "svck", it simply puts time/development/focus in other areas. For combat/stealth to have been as good as you'd like in this game, I imagine you would see other areas of the game underwhelming instead.

A trade-off many are unwilling to take, including myself. I hope Bethesda doesn't make this a ridiculous cinematic action series.

No, I mean Atari 2600. I was just stating my opinion and mentioning how I've seen games go from single-pixel characters to something resembling real life. While Skyrim has its problems, I wouldn't say that the game svcks, by any means.

EDIT: After looking it up, I should've said second generation consoles; my mistake.

There was a mod for that for Fallout 3, presence of dead bodies kept enemies alert and searching for the player for some time, until they thought that whoever did that had left. Most of the time they did find me, though :bolt:
