CK duplicating cells and saving for mods

Thanks for stopping by this post,
I have a few questions to some others out there that might have knowledge of this.
When i first make a new level (house or cave) do i have to make a duplicate of the cell it is of?
say for instance if i want to upgrade my breeze house i tried to make a duplicate then mod around more things and built some extra rooms then i went outside of the house and made it look a bit bigger to match kinda. My issue is about modding right on the file then saving it as a test1 or w/e i call it? or do i have to make a duplicate copy of the file, And one more question, when i mod directly from the file(s) not a duplicate and save it to a new name does it keep the changes to that *original* file?
I hope not i have goofed a bit but since then i have loaded that cell back up from the raw file and i dont see it altered so im guessing it doesnt save over the original. Though some help and feedback would rock.
thanks

The tutorials tell you that duplicating an existing interior cell, renaming the duplicate, and removing everything in it is the easiest way to go about creating a new interior cell.

However, if your intent is to modify something that already exists, there is no need to duplicate it.

ahh ok thanks, yeah im building for say like breeze home adding more to the outside of it on the left side and also making an extended room on the left side in the breeze house its fun i just wanted to make sure it didnt change the original file incase i un check the mod i am making so i was just making sure that modding on the file wasnt changing it for the reason im not trying to change the original just adding a mod to the original blah lol
