Default cell position

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:07 am

Has anyone found a way to change the default position a cell takes when entered into the render window? When I drag a new cell into the window it has a ridiculous z position. Sometimes in the 1.5k range though I have seen the 500 and 700 range frequently as well. Thus every time I place a new cell I have to go into the options and edit z to 0 to get it on a more manageable level.

You when you say cell, you mean an interior tile?

Drag it over an existing tile and press "F" to drop it to the floor of the existing tile
Or use Ctrl+D to create a duplicate of an existing tile.
You can also use Ctrl+F to search/Replace your duplicate with another tile.

Works for everything else just as well, of course, but the above is my usual workflow for building interiors (before decorating)

Yes, I was looking at interior tiles. I just wasn't certain if there was a way to set a default Z position. I find myself draging and dropping a lot rather than duplicating and replacing. I suppose I should change my habits though. Less of a headache that way.

When you drag something from the object window into the render window, the item will be placed at the height of whatever your cursor ended up over. If your cursor is over the void, it will be placed at the camera.

Ah. That would explain it. It probably is just that easy, I can't think of a time when I hadn't moused over another object in order to place a new tile. For some OCD based reason I like placing things in the void then dragging them into position. Thanks for the tip.

Even if your not going to work through them, reading the tutorials at least will reveal other worthwhile tips as well.

I was working through the Beth tutorials. I just hadn't noticed that they were pointing to another tile to get the Z value for a new tile. I just assumed they were dragging and dropping, which is why it was bothering me so much.

Have you activated Snap to grid? (The red circle with grid icon - or press "Q")

With this active the tiles dock to each other when they are close.

Yes, I did have snap active, and they did snap together. Sometimes a tile would show correctly while another wouldn't and when I fixed the tile that was missing I would loose a tile in a completely different area when in game.
