First time thief questions.

1. Do named NPC's respawn if I kill them? If so, how long does it take for them to respawn?
2. When I sneak, does my follower sneak too and have my same skill level at it?
3. In Oblivion you could only sell stolen items to certain people, is it the same here?
4. Should I dual weild or just use a dagger and shield?

Thanks for the help guys and gals.

I dont think so no. some NPC's that are key characters & attached to an important quest line cannot. But others can, but they dont respawan, dead is dead.

2. When I sneak, does my follower sneak too and have my same skill level at it?

They sneak too yes, but no they dont have the same level of sneak & when the enemy is close they normally attack them right away. From what i played.

3. In Oblivion you could only sell stolen items to certain people, is it the same here?

Yes, you can only sell stolen items to fences. There are perks in Speechcraft though, that allows you to sell stolen goods to anyone. Investor + Fence.

4. Should I dual weild or just use a dagger and shield?

It's upto you, whichever you prefer.

Cool, thanks for the answers. A couple more. Would I be able to backstab with a sword and shield? And are there any followers in game that are naturally stealthy so I can get one that will match my play style?

You can sneak attack with a sword for a x6 modifier with perks, or daggers for a x15 modifier, also with stealth perks. Never tried with a shield though :/

Any melee weapon will do extra damage from backstab. Any 1-h weapon will do 6x backstab damage if you get the necessary perk, so yes, swords are good... In fact, they can one-shot from backstab almost as well as daggers, and they are much better in real fights. Though a shield will not really help you that much if you play a stealth character, as you'd probably be better off with dual swords...

You will get an assasin follower if you finish the Dark Brotherhood questline... I haven't tried her myself, but if any follower is stealthy it should be her... you can also dress your followers with stealth-enchanted items to make them more stealth, but as a thief/assasin it's always better to go alone... 1 person can hide much easier than 2, especially if the 2nd happens to be controlled by an AI as dumb as Skyrim's...

For question four, I would recommend one-handed and restoration/alteration/illusion. It makes the game more varied and fun.

If you have the dual wield damage perk then 2nd dagger > shield. Otherwise, there is no difference between a single dagger power sneak attack and a dual sneak attack. Dual power sneak attack only counts the first blow for the x15 modifier, which is the same as a single dagger attack anyway. Also, shields reduce your chance to sneak, so if you use one you may not want to whip it out unless you're in a fight.
