Dirt Cliffs missing edges?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 10:17 pm

My dirt cliffs appear all normal in CK but when I go in game, all the cliffs I put in are missing edges. What might be causing this?

Here are couple of pics:

This is what I see in CK.. the edge is nice and smooth, looks natural

And this is what I see in game.. The same edge looks like it's been cut off...

When you look at the edge between the two poles in the first picture, the edge is natural looking.. not straight cut. When you look at the second picture, the same ege between the two poles has a straight cut line, almost like it was cut with the scissors. I looked at other cliffs in the neighbouring area that were originally put by the designers and these look the same in CK and in game.

Here look at the piece of the same dirt cliff I put, in CK.. see how the grass continues and you have a slight coverage on the face of the rock?

Now look at the same edge I see in game.. It's got this cut line going right through the middle... where the grass connects to the rock... Very unnatural looking. In CK there is some moss so you don't see straight line.

Now if you look at the original dirt cliff put in by designers... This is in CK..

Now the same cliff in game... You don't see the straight cut line... looks pretty much the same in CK and in game

Are you by chance using the high-resolution textures in-game?

I'm not sure, but I THINK that the CK uses standard resolution textures. If so, how the textures wrap around the models may be slightly different, resulting in what you are seeing.

If you have them enabled, try turning your high-res textures off when you next load into the game and see if you get the same results, or if it looks the same as it does in the CK...

This is the only thing I can think of that would cause something to look different in the game from how it looks in the CK...

You mean the high res DLC? No, I haven't uploaded that.

Ok.. I know what's causing it but I still don't know why. When I first put in this cliff it would dissapear on me after fast travel so I had to set it to full LOD. I just went into CK and unclicked the Full LOD box. After going in game the cliff looks normal. The problem is.. it dissapears after fast travel because of the dissapearing objects bug that was already mentioned in another thread...

So the question is... why clicking Full LOD produces these unnatural looking edges? Is there anything else I can do?

Is the dissapearing large objects bug fixed? I haven't seen any update to the CK..

The funny thing is.. I unclicked Full LOD to get my nice looking cilff back, went back in game.. started fast travelling... and now it's not dissapearing anymore.. Then I felt brave and I unclicked the house too.. Went back in game, both cliff and the house were there... Started fast travelling... both cliff and the house are still there. Before I was never able to see the house if not set to Full LOD. So is this fixed, or is CK messing with me and eventually is going to make my cliff and house dissapear again? :P

I think it has to do something with the fact that LOD is low quality replicas of the object, to be viewed from far away. So when you check the Full LOD box, it lowers the quality of the loaded model, hence the abrupt edge. You don't need a smooth transition on a rock that's 200 ft away.

Thank you! That makes sense. Just another reason why Full LOD is not a solution to the dissapearing objects bug.

Btw, dissapearing objects bug has not dissapeared yet.. I created a brand new esp file and attempted to put the same house in the same spot without setting it to Full LOD. Upon one fast travel and back, the house was invisible. In the original mod I'm working on however, no matter what character I use or what save file I use and how much I fast travel, I can't duplicate this bug anymore. I don't want to raise my hopes up and get too happy.. but if something made it go away I wish I knew what it was so I could tell others.

Perhaps simply setting the Full LOD box, saving, then unfilling it keeps the positive effect (no more bug) while removing the negative effect (lower quality)?
