What causes lights to flicker onoff depending on view angle?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 6:55 pm

Been mucking about with lights, but I'm having an issue where a light will turn on/off depending on where i'm looking, or part of the interior mesh lighting turns on/off.

No doubt there are some limits I'm not aware off, causing these problems. Pardon the pun, but can anyone shed any light?

I had that problem with my fireplace in my new home. I found moving the "light" just outside of the fireplace to fix it, same issue with candle lights. I find the purple bulbs seems to be more effected. I tested a bunch of different lights and customized ones that did not have problems. can't tell you which ones but they are white based. issue happened in Mistveil keep and I never modded it.

Only something like 3 or 4 shadow-casting lights can be drawn at once. Replace ones that don't need to be casting shadows with the no shadow variants (Usually have NS at the end).

Thanks

What about the cruddy looking stripey shadow effect that goes over objects? Noticed it drastically in my Whiterun home, but it's appearing in this cell too, and I'm avoiding having too many overlapping lights, and using Shadow Casting lights only on the biggest/strongest lights.

Shadow striping can usually be fixed by upping the Depth Bias of that particular light:

Under the "Working With Lights" section.

@PirateLord
Hopefully you've figured out how to use the "# of lights" feature in the shader tab in "render window properties" by now, since your post was a month ago, but now ya know. I was searching on how to block lights from one room to another and stumbled on to your post. Anyway, in the debug mode "# of lights", blue and green are good, purple is not so good, and when something is red, that's where you get the blinking lights. I hope you already figured that out (a month later), but if not that should help A LOT. I had the same problem until I started using the lights debug mode, now everythings good. Happy modding. :smile:

Only 4 shadow lights can be drawn at once. In which case, use them only where they make a big impact on the feel of the level. I find myself using shadow lights for maybe... 1 in every 4-5 lights I place. Non shadow lights only look 'bad' in some places, and shadow lights barely make a difference in others.

Also if you use roombounds to stop the rendering of unseen objects, you can use FAR more shadow lights in your cell, as you then have a limit of 4 lights within the roombounds currently being rendered, instead of the entire rendered level.
