Q: How do I create a new item that uses an existing mesh and

Example: I placed the Skyforge in a cavern I created and made a retexture for it so that it matches the mossy rock throughout the cavern. I'm wanting to have the mossy texture only appear on this replica of the Skyforge, and not on the original in Whiterun. How do I do that?

Any help would be much appreciated.

create a testure set (TXST) and add your textures to it.

then go to your skyforge duplicate and link the TXST

If I understand him correctly that's the problem: He did not make a duplicate of the skyforge but simply placed the existing skyforge in his cave. So what he needs to do is right click the skyforge object in the object window, duplicate, rename the duplicate as he wishes and then apply his new texture to the duplicate and place that duplicate in his cave.

Textures are handled on the object level and not on the placed entity level. Meaning if you place several entities of the same object they will all be the same, lookwise. In order to have them appear different they need to be entities of different objects. Hence if you want a forge to look different to another forge you need to duplicate the existing forge object, change texture/model/whatever of the duplicate and place an entitiy of the duplicate in the world.

Thanks! So, if I made a duplicate and called it "Skyforge Replica," I would then name the textures "skyforgereplica.dds," and the meshes "skyforgereplica.nif?" Is it that simple?

I don't know about texture sets, so you probably should not listen to what I am going to say, as texturesets seem to be a better solution, but this is how I did it:

Download NifSkope.

Copy and rename the NIF you want rexextured to mynewname.nif.

Find the textures and normal maps used by your NIF. Edit them and name them mynewname.dds and mynewname_n.dds for the normal map. Now, open your copyd Nif in Nifskope, go to the very last node, click on and on and eventually you are able to change the textures used by your Nif. Change them into the new textures you made, save and voila, you have a working Nif with new textures.
