Working on 2 computers without uploading to workshop...

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:29 am

OK, my search-fu must be very weak, because I don't see any topics on this yet...but I have a job where I basically man the telephone and take messages, so I can work on mods at work and at home.

But the Steam Cloud, even though it is enabled, doesn't update mods created on the CK.

I don't want to upload to the Workshop until it's actually working, either.

How can you take the files from one computer to another and have the CK function? you can't just copy the ESP and PEX files, becuase the scripts are actually stored in the source folder, and I'm not sure even copying those as well would work. I"m paranoid by now about trying to do this...overwriting the wrong files could seriously break the CK I'm sure.

Copying should be fine. Any scripts you compile go into Data/Scripts, and their source is in Data/Scripts/Source. Unless you've unpacked your Scripts bsa then the source folder should only contain the source for the files you've made.

Danger Will Robinson! Did as you said (Copied source files, compiled scripts, and source scripts from work computer to home computer) and now the CK is broken for that mod. I cannot assign any properties of any scripts. They keep coming back as "using default value" even after I assign them a value and click "OK" - I go back in, and they're back at default values. This is bad. Guess I will only be able to work on that particular mod at work, since it is now irrevocably borked at home.

I've got two rigs too. You can put Steam and/or Skyrim+CK on a separate drive, then SymLink to it where needed such that you only have to maintain one installation/version of any project.

Alternatively, get a Dropbox account and install Dropbox on both your home PC and work PC so you can cloud-storage your mods online. It's free and the Dropbox app integrates seamlessly into your system and is very lightweight (just drag and drop).

If you want to get really fancy, perhaps learn to use Git or similar revision control system and use that for your mod. That way you can check in your work on one computer and check it out on the other. All the other benefits of revision control aside, of course.
