You should be fine, especially if you are using Conjuration. But if it gets too rough, grab a follower.

There's been a couple of dicey situations where my companion saved my bacon.

If you have enough Hp and good enough armor to withstand a few hit, forget about companions, I often have to save Lydia's [censored] and after a while it becomes a chore.

It really depends on your playstyle.

I choose no companion, especially with a mage character. I had kept them for a while but it gets old when you're always killing your own follower with a stray spell mid combat...

You have to sacrifice AOE for a follower, since it will affect your follower as much as the enemy.

A companion is very helpful at times if you are a mage.

I don't use companions, they disappear after some time. I've already lost Lydia and Faendal

I'm always afraid to use a follower- they get in the way of spellcasting and there are so many stories of companions getting 'lost', I'm worried I'll lose my stuff.

I found them helpful early in the game and later if I find good lewt that needs hauling. Aoe is not a followed friend.
