Whatever happenend to stylish fonts in an rpg ? the typeface in Skyrim is too modern looking, Ariel would be my last choice, it seems to be used by everybody nowadays.

Yes, a gothic font option would be more 'immersive'

I strongly disagree.
The font is beautiful and appropriate.
No medieval clichés, please.

The UI has problems. Aesthetics ain't one of them.

I would slap you too. Besides the journal or the map, the font is good. As this guy says:

The game is a medieval (fantasy) cliché; shouldn't it have the clichéd lettering as well? (http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/Text.jpg).

Not really. From the top of my head, I can list Dwemer ruins not fitting the Medieval postcard.
It's precisely because TES doesn't perfectly fit the medieval mold that it must shun away from falling prey to medieval conventions. The suggestion of gothic drop caps would just create a terrible pastiche.

The aesthetics are great. Functionality is not.

It's not Futura. Not even condensed Futura.
It's a beautiful sans serif, befitting the game very much so.
It's the UI functionality that is in need of some fixing.

Still... You'd not consider http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/data.jpg right?

Functionality falls second here IMO... though normally I would not want entire pages in decorative script...

I think a book's pages (in the game) should look indicative of the setting ~regardless of whether its harder to read the lettering.

Nothing wrong with the font itself all on it's own, but in TES, it has no place because it is out of place.

UI font is obviously not the same used in in-game books, which is, are, much closer to what you seem to be asking for.
Does the font or the overall UI aesthetics break immersion for you?

For this specific font:

1) The condensed proportions are reminiscent of gothic type.
2) The slight embossed effect evokes metal type.
3) On the other hand, its distinctive enough to communicate the UI is a methaphor, not an in-game artifact like a book.

I mean the UI aesthetics, great, the functionality, not so much.
I mean things like taking me forever to go through all those potions, which are listed alphabetically, Lord know why, instead of by attribute they effect. THings like not being able to sort items through other criteria, etc.

Nothing breaks immersion for me in RPGs (specifically); I don't get immersed (in the sense that it's usually meant here). Menus & HUDs don't bother me in the least.

Since menus aren't part of the game itself, I do not see the need for ornate menu fonts; though in the case of Fallout 1 & 2, the period piece menuing system was really cool IMO, and added to the atmosphere. If done well, and still fuctional; there is no reason not to decorate the menu a bit.

I expect that will be corrected with some of the first menu mods released after the CS is available.

I'm was thinking that Ariel style font is used by almost everybody nowadays, I just find it too plain and unstylish.

I don't like the thought of a fancy font in a menu. If it's something that people HAVE to interact with repeatedly then it has to be readable first. But on books, signs, in game decorations, why not?

I'm not thinking of a fancy font, even Georgia would be better than the used everywhere Ariel type.
