Windhelm house, what's with the blood?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 6:47 am

So I buy this place and all the additions and go inside and there are still blood splatters all around the entrance and the enchanting room is full of bones and body parts that cannot be removed. Yea it would have been nice to have this stuff cleaned up. Other than that the house is great. Love the upstairs area. But that blood and gore really should have been removed.

One of the purchasable options is to clean up the murderer's mess for like 500 gold. There is a bug that if you purchase the living room upgrade before purchasing the clean up, then the option to purchase the clean up will disappear.

Always purchase the clean up first before decorating. If you don't all the dirty stuff will stay unless you remove it via console.

You should always check the UESP before buying a house. The corresponding pages always list the bugs revolving around the house, in this case, the "Clean up the mess" option disappearing if you purchase the living room upgrade first. Oh, and also, if you buy the house before you are the Thane of Eastmarch, you won't be able to interact with the weapon racks (might just be for PS3).

Either do the Stormcloak quests up to the Rescue from Fort Neugrad or complete the Imperial Legion questline.

freedom?

you think the leader of the stormcloak rebellion would just sell you a house and let you live within his city walls if he doesnt know who you are? or what your allegiances are?

ulfric stormcloak has the freedom. the freedom to ignore you. you have the freedom to find somewhere else to live if you dont like the jarl.

Really? And what brought you to that conclusion? Because the game is bugged I got owned?

Thanks for the comments that were actually helpful. I'll be sure to look before I buy in the future. I just went down the list buying the options and never saw the one for the cleanup. I'll have to back track a bit now unfortunately.

This happened to me. I never had the 'cleanup' option.

Are you on PC? Go into the house. Open the console. Type the following:

df492.disable

WARNING! If you put anything in the chest that has blood on it, REMOVE THE ITEMS before typing that code. The chest vanishes

Thanks. Not on PC though. I'm on the 360 currently until I get to a point where I can afford a new PC. Mine is too old to run this properly. I went back to a save before I purchased the home. Thankfully that was last night so I was only a few hours past it. I noticed that the option to clean the blood is off the bottom of the screen when you first pull up the items you can purchase for the home so it can't be seen unless you scroll down first. Since I had plenty of money I just bought everything from the top down. By the time I got to the bottom of the list the option to clean was already gone so I never even saw it. I had searched this forum but failed to see anything in the posts I pulled up and I've been avoiding the wiki to avoid spoilers but I guess in this case it might not have been a bad idea. Thanks again for the help. The house is much nicer now. Definitely my favorite so far with all the display options available. So glad they did have the option to remove the blood and guts though. Shame the bug causes some people to have to live with it. Hopefully that will be corrected in one of the upcoming patches.

Yeah, I can definitely feel your pain. I had the same issue; I got Blood on the Ice to trigger, completed it, and bought the house. By that time, I'd stashed more than enough coin for all of the upgrades, so I started from the top when buying the furnishings.

Here's the kicker, though: I had the UESP page open to Hjerim at the time I did that, though I hadn't read the entire page. Luckily I was able to revert to the autosave where I'd entered the palace to buy/decorate the house.

I definitely agree with the consensus that Hjerim is in fact the best house in the game, in regards to storage space/decorations. Hope you enjoy living there as much as I have!

The quest that you HAVE to compelte in order to buy that house explains why it is there.

Yes I did the quest. I knew why it was there originally. I just didn't understand why it remained after I purchased the home. Now i understand it is a bug with the game that removes an option to clean it.

The bug only removes it if you buy the living room option before cleanign up that murderers mess option

I didn't know this either. It also explains why when I bought all I could, I still had the conversation option to buy stuff enough though there wasn't anything left to buy. That character had too many bugs and so I have this new one now. I'll be sure to look out for that clean up option. Thnx.

You really can't expect everyone to go look online and read a list of bugs before doing anything in game... I found out about this one too late, and that may be the case with the OP, too.

I find it best to get that quest to trigger early on in your game. Always entering the main gates of Windhelm at night became a compulsion for me after my first two character's failed attempts to get that house. Some people are suggesting that it might be a time sensitive quest, and whether or not that's true, I always try to knock out Blood on the Ice within a few hours of starting. I've only had one character side with the Empire, and she wasn't able to get the house. There was talk of it being because some important Imperial NPC gets killed during the Civil War Questline, but I'm not sure about that, either. My current Khajiit may end up siding with the Empire, so I'll update this is he's able to purchase the house after the dust has settled (he's already done Blood on the Ice).

Lol it amazes me how some people can be such jerks when someone just has a simple question. I'm sure the OP is incredibly sorry that he prefers to play the game instead of researching every little bug.
