Lydia Says, "Skyrim is for the Nords!"

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 7:21 pm

What do you guys make of this? It makes me uncomfortable playing as my Breton or Orc.

I hear other remarks such as "True Nords never back down!"
Is that Nord to Nord or Nord to other races?

That's gamesas as usual not instituting character checks for dialog. The company does many things well, but they've very, very seldom bothered to put in checks for gender, race, best skills, etc.

I'm guessing the nords just have generic taunts applied to them, and Lydia just happens to use the same voice system. The game probably didn't have a flag set up to stop her insulting her master.

Like the nords in Windhelm who take the piss out of a Dunmer woman while my own Dunmer is standing next to them in full daedric with one hand on fire.

No they have the dialog checks for the NPCs (afaik, Lydia is a Nord and I have yet to see anyone besides a Dunmer say N'wah) but the OP is saying it makes him feel weird having his sworn companion always yelling how her race is superior to everyone else's when he is standing right there.

I've heard her say "Skyrim is for the Nords," to dragons, trolls, wolves and the occasional skeever as well as bandits and Necromancers. Apparently she's just very patriotic.....

You should see how my Redguard feels!

I guess she serves him, but only because she must...

If you have problems with her, then talk to her about them. She's sworn to carry your burdens.

Anyhow, it isn't like there's much if any depth to the follower system in Skyrim. I'm not surprised by what the OP has said.

Personally I stopped using Lydia after one dungeon. Followers seem to make things too easy.

Maybe the term "Nord" applies to those native to Skyrim or those that act like Nords, even if they aren't Nords themselves, in her eyes. Who knows?

She's probably one of the worst followers, I don't use her.

I think we're talking about different things. You're discussing the NPC as a roleplayed character, and I agree: that's certainly in the mix. But one would expect a character accompanying you to be aware that the party leader isn't of the same race, and adjust at least a bit accordingly, which simply doesn't happen in gamesas titles. It explains, for example, why a Skyrim lord who asks you to do him a favor will give you a piece of huge armor in reward when you're a mage dressed in robes, carrying a staff, or why the Companions will respond to you as though you were a warrior when you're not. :)

That saying is not about racism. Its about self rule. A technical interpretation of the grammar could say that its racist, but that is not the intent or meaning.

Yeah sure. Just like someone saying America is for White People wouldn't be racist. It isn't like other people live there.
