Where is [i]click & drag[i] in the Render Window...?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:50 am

I was going to get myself in trouble with Papyris and I hear the dialogue editor is even more fearsome now.
.
I think that, just maybe, I was being a bit too ambitious. If Skyrim was this difficult, I'd probably still be stuck in Helgen.
.
I'm trying to place a static object -just a wee tower- one cell northwest of Riverside Path. You'd think I'd be wondering where it has gone in the game but first, I'd like to know how to set up the Creation Kit so that I can click and drag objects around the Render Window with the mouse (or trackball). The gizmos are unresponsive and when I attempt to click and drag an object all that happens is that the object is deselected when the mouse pointer passes over another object - at which point this other object is selected - and so on.
.
To date, I've been positioning everything by manually adjusting the coordinates in the object reference window. However, this does not work so well for door teleport markers which do not display the object reference window. To move and rotate these, the click and drag needs to be functioning which, in my case, it is not. I could really use some hellp with this.
.
Thanks in advance...

Hmmm? Just click on an object to select it. Then click and hold and drag you mouse to move it.

Thanks for the confirmation, but It's not working in my case.

Just to ask the obvious, are you holding the mouse button down while you're dragging?

Yes, I am holding the mouse button down while I am dragging - just like moving files around Windows Explorer - but the objects simply won't budge.

After selecting an object, when you move your mouse over it, the pointer is a cross arrows. When you see that, you can click and drag the object.

Edit : if you see the gizmo, you probably slect the gizmo, press 2 to hide it.

Select the object by clicking and releasing the mouse button. Then click and hold when you see the + shaped crosshair. Move your mouse and the object will move along the XY plane. To move up or down, just press Z while draging the object, or just before you start to drag (While object is selected).

If this does not work, then you screwed something up.

I've found the problem - its a bug in the Creation Kit.
.
I noticed that if I click and hold one mouse button, then click and hold the other mouse button, I get some movement when I drag the object with both mouse buttons held down.
.
I use a symmetrically laid out trackball with my right hand - so, just like the mouse button configuration for lefties, it is more practical if I have both the left and right mouse buttons reversed. I do this by checking the "reverse mouse buttons" in Windows' settings. If I switch the buttons to the "standard" mouse button configuration (by unchecking the box in Windows' settings), the problem goes away in the Creation Kit, but I'm forever hitting the wrong mouse buton in everything else - because fingers are dominant over the thumb, just as the index finger is dominant over the other fingers.
.
TESCS and the GECK never had this problem. Short of tearing my Logitec trackball to pieces and resoldering the microswitch wires to swap the button configurration at a hardware level, there is no solution. Unless, that is, Bethesda update the Skyrim and CK engines to consult the Windows registry on load before assuming that everyone uses the same mouse button configuration.
.
I would appreciate some feedback from Bethesda staff as to whether this problem is going to be addressed in the very near future. I have to make a decision about whether to make a special order or tear down an existing trackball and do some soldering (for which I have a very indelicate touch).
.
Thanks in advance...

Just to update the latest on the mouse-button monkey-business, I contacted Logitech this morning and they pointed me to a tool of theirs called SetPoint. I thought it would only change the registry settings, which wouldn't exactly work around the issue given the apparent failure to consult the registry. In spite of my misgivings, the outcome of swapping the mouse buttons in SetPoint was successful and now the pointing device behaves normally in both the Skyrim game environment and in the Creation Kit. I am uncertain as to whether it is SetPoint that alters the firmware or tweaks the driver or whether it is Windows which doesn't quite register the changes in all the right places. Who knows? This may well remain a mystery.
.
However, this game engine behaviour is still a potential problem for users who configure their hardware via the Windows Control Panel and it would probably be best to look into it once other, more pressing, issues have been attended to (e.g. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1344939-things-disappearing-in-the-world/page__st__30, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1347249-unofficial-creation-kit-bug-list-2/page__st__60__p__20325586#entry20325586, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1345681-navmesh-bug/, http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1352954-unofficial-creation-kit-modding-bug-list-3/.)
