Tips for becoming a Archer based character?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:19 pm

I am creating another new character and this time he is a Khajiit and his main form of combat will be archery. Any tips on how to build him to become a master/expert archer? I have ideas of my own but I want other input.

Stealth, light armor, and archery. Sneak shots and archery are deadly.

you can use sneak , lightarmor and smithing next to archery , and the 5th skill as you see fit
i'd hesitate between enchanting or illusion but you can just pick whatever you want , like one armed instead , because the combo archery+sneak+smithing makes you overpowered quite quickly

some perks that really help me are the sneak perk that gives yuo 3x damage with sneak attacks, also the slow down time perk is really helpful, and you probably want to wear light armor

Best skill to compliment archery is definitely sneak. There's no point in not getting sneak attacks from range since it's not difficult to sneak with bow range and it takes them longer to find/get to you which is more arrows in them before you have to worry about kiting.

You might also want to think of using Alchemy as adding poisons to your bow to increase damage and cc (crowd control) eg fury and paralysis poisons. Aside from that what everyone else said.

Alchemy is nice for poisoning the arrows.

Smithing down the light armor path to create elven/glass.

You'll still want a melee option to decide on 1H or 2H.

Also keep a good eye out for some enchanted items that add bow damage, I have a pair of boots and bracers that add in total 50% bow damage. Also, enchanted bows. Good luck, my first ever archer in tes series has been in skyrim and i love it, next will be a 2 handed barbarian esqe nord though :)

Definitely Archery and Sneak but also consider Illusion, which is helpful in surprise attacks from big animals which might otherwise be fatal. Poison can add enough extra damage to be able to one-shot an enemy; use it on every sneak attack. Always be in sneak mode outside of a city. You will find that Illusion levels up slowly; use Muffle in cities and cast Courage on friendly NPCs (doesn't cause bad reactions) to fast-level Illusion.

I started with a Dark Elf, got a bow and then traded for a better elvin bow and other bows I could find and then simply only ever used the bow unless im about to die to kill pretty much everyhting to get my level up in archery. Simply stick with the weapon and use it the most.

Spoiler
Another great tip is go to riverwood (correction) and do a small job for Faendal so can become your follower, he trains in archery. Do the job ask him to follow you, get some money pay him to teach you archery, then ask him to carry something and take the money back, rinse & repeat for archery training.

Spoiler
There is also a Khijat roaming with the caravans outside cities named Kyhala ... he can train you sneak skill, you have to do a job for him too and he can also be a follower.

That way you can have two followers who 1. Khijat like you to train sneak and fight with you, 2. A Archery trainer who can be a follower whos great to fight with you equiping him with decent bows like yourself.

Also I joined thieves guild at riften straight away to get by sneak and thief skills up, this combined with archery training has got me a very enjoyable character in this area now.

Also do the companion quest as early as possible. Pick up Aela as a follower so you can get "free" archery training (up to 75) while your out on the roads. Then concentrate on the archery and sneak tree's that boost ranged damage.

Could also level up smithing the heavy armor way and get to dragon armor, that way he can upgrade daedric bows with greater efficiency. Unless dragon armor is not being sought after in which case your path works better.

Ok, riverwood, my correction, as regards picking me up about the male/female, thats a bit anol to be honest, its not like the six will cause a major fail in getting trained ... jeez.

(spoiler) there is also a lady close to helgen that lives in a shack and she will train you to use archery, if you don't want to cheat or use glitches to level up you can get up to 5 levels i think.

If you can (and have the sneak perk) wait until their back is turned if possible, because it will normally be an instant kill that way. Also use poisons.

Get a follower who also uses a bow and give them one of your best arrows. They'll keep shooting that type of arrow and you can collect them from the corpses and ground nearby any target. Free arrows.

I must admit I went right in first as warrior nord, then later tried the Archer/Thief role, and Im enjoying this type much better.

*SPOILER*

I found the lessons with Angie early on to be a nice way to get a few practical lessons and skill points. She lives in the mountains around the bone chill passage.

smithing and or enchantment to refine bows to uber lvls is highly recommended, otherwise it can take quite a few arrows out of sneak. I'm a big fan of the Forsworn bow which can be highly refined without the need for the higher smithing perks.

The archery and it's related perks are fun, but the definitely make the game pretty easy. I'm carrying 4 ebony bows that I've enchanted for burning, soul trap, damage magica and shock. Mostly use the burning bow and it will kill giants in 2 shots if I sneak.

Pretty much the only melee weapon I use is an ebony sword enchanted to steal health for when dragons land close.

Enchanting is a must. I enchant everything I can with fortify archery and plus double enchanting your bow will make you do some insane damage.
