swimming through the ice

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:18 pm

I don't really care if games aren't 100% like real life, but i think that if they would have made the ice cold water slowly drain your health while you swim through it would have added a little bit more of a challenge and would have made you think of what route you should take to get to the other side. do you think it is a good idea, mod worthy?

I would find it cool if being in snow areas your stamina, or perhaps your health, was drained slowly unless you were wearing fur or some type of warm covering.

Frostbite comes from spiders but not water WTF Beth!

I've been wondering when this would be brought up here.

I thought about this too. I always wear my fur armor when i'm going through snowy areas. Mod worthy but I don't play on PC anyway

That's because Nords take saunas, drink mead and go jump in the snow naked. Didn't you know that? That's why cold water doesn't bother them. Frostbite venom gets them because it takes all the alcohol out of the blood.

whoever brought up the lava had a great point. why not frost damage from icy water?

walking on ice is also missing. i walk out onto it and immediately fall in the water while im clipping through a sheet of ice. even minecraft lets me actually walk on ice.

yea, but i'm a breton. maybe you get 1 point of frost damage per second, nords resists it because they have 50% cold resistance, kind of like mass effect when you were exploring outside in a storm.

If its just appearance (artwork) that makes it icy... what distinguishes icy water from just (regular?) water?
Would they have to change all icy water in the game in order to not have the same effect come from water that's not icy?
(*Is there water that's not icy?)

They seemed to have similar problems with water in FO3... The PC living in the Vault would still drink from the toilet.

*I guess... you could add an "Icy" zone of some kind and place one around all icy water (or the reverse; make all water icy and use a zone to negate the effect where inappropriate.)

well there is obviously different areas in the game, and there is a big area where the water has ice blocks in it, so i would assume that that is the icy water.

Sure, but I mean internally... a way to check if it should damage the PC.

As a patch (for example), I think they could only do it by adding area effect damage around any water that looks icy; or area effect negation, if all water was made to damage the PC ~and they could miss some in either case.

It really won't make you think about going other routes. Most areas where there is icy water there is a lot of land, so you're not going to be in there for long. In fact, you're really not in water for long at all.

Alot of these a good ideas... But perhaps it would be good for an Alternate mode, or an option for greater realism.

It would if it dropped your stamina and took hitpoints as though it were lava.
(Make it a serious risk, without some kind of enchantment to resist cold).

**But IMO that should only happen if you go underwater; (actually I'd prefer just chest deep, but I don't think they can check for that).

My preference for games is that the options be about display & audio ~not so much gameplay. I can see having a gore slider, and even an NPC banter frequency slider, but for most aspects of a game I'd prefer it if little else were an option, and just had to be accepted. IMO its easier to take a game more seroiusly if it's not too servile.

It should drain your stamina first, and then your health.

Totally agree. There should be much more environmental damage in Skyrim than there currently is. Being in icy water for too long should drain health and stamina with the added possibility of hyphothermia, etc. Also when you leave the water there should be additional character sounds (panting, shivering, etc) to add to the experience.

Did anybody else find their character stalling and grunting while climbing up the throat of the world to meet Parthuurnax? I'm hoping it was by design and that my character was suffering in the blizzard but it could have been a bug I guess (or an Icewraith biting my [censored]) :ermm:

This was a nice touch. There should be more of them.
