Snap to problem (tutorial 2)

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 6:12 pm

Ok been trying everything to find a soulation to this with out much luck.

The problem. I've been watching the secound tutorial video on how to make my first dungeon and the guy clears all the old cell blocks and pulls in a wall. He then duplicates this wall and use's snap to to place the next wall perfectly inline. He then creates a corner which he drags in and it apears on the same axis as the orginal peace.

My troubles, snap to doesn't not seem to work at all. I place the item move it to 0 on all axis and then duplicate. The new peace after moving is never quite lined up a. I have snap to turned on and i have tryed shift q on the orginal peace and empty space.

Also when i change the snap to ratio say from 1,8,32,128 it always remains the same?

Here's a video of the problem with the snapping... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fx-84qsv6kg

Have you used the shortcut Shift+q to select the object you wish to snap to?

Also, not all pieces fit perfectly. Usually statics in the same kit that have the same number, 01 for example, properly snap to each other.

I have noticed that some of the set peices use a different snap-to reference and they aren't always nice numbers... for example currently I am working on Dwemer ruin type of area, anything with LgRoom or LgHall I have found that if i set my snap-to at:

Snap To Grid = 192
Snap To Angle = 45

Those work perfectly for me, yet if i use a different type of set peice for example the SmRoom peices... it does not always work and often those peices won't align...

Basically i just had to sit there with the predominant type of set peice i wanted to use, and just kind of try to move them together with another set peice, changing my snap to by a couple of degrees in either direction until i got it down to a perfect match. Also... sometimes if you put two items very close together that are from the same set peices (such as they are both from dwemer LgRoom) and then use the SHIFT+Q to snap them they will be at least on the same z-axis so you can just move them on the x or y until they are perfectly aligned.

hope this helps!

If you really are using 192, then any power of 2 scale should work exactly the same. 192 is just 32x6. I use 32 as my default and have never had any snapping issues.

Not to mention each tileset is based off power of 2 scales. In effect, 1 unit is 1 pixel. The standard tileset is 256x256 units. This hasn't changed since Oblivion. (Didn't do much morrowind modding so i cant vouch for that)

Lol, ya know the entire time I have been making this level none of that even occured to me! it's funny the things you don't really think about when you are focused on something else too much, i just went around playing with snap settings until it looked right  however, I am now confused as to why Firedshot had difficulty with his snapping if your snapping default of 32 worked fine for you, but apparently not for him?
