Wondering about: Tides

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:52 pm

OK, the world of TES has two moons. And they're HUGE compared to Earth's moons...But I see no evidence of tides. The water level of the ocean remains rock steady at the same level - Do you think a mod could raise/lower the water level in the ocean zones to simulate tides?

This would be especially difficult in areas with boats, floating docks or floating ice, since those would have to go up and down with the water...

In past creation kits, one set the level of the water in a cell. Not sure if this can be done globally or not.

Also, our moon is 1/4 the size of Earth and 1/80th the mass. We don't know the size and mass of the moons of Nirn nor the radius of the orbits, but they could be small enough or far enough away that their effect on the tides is minimal.

Just going by the size you see them in the sky, they are either much larger than Earth's moon, or in very low orbits. Either way, that intensifies the tidal effect.

Unless the existance of two moons has a countering effect on how they each might affect the tide individually. Not to mention the existance of many unaccounted stellar and supernatural manifestations intersecting the realm of Nirn may in fact provide their own contering forces. Nobody on Nirn really studies true science. The only higher learning that is manifest has to do with arcane arts. The only ones I know of that had any sort of dedication to the sciences and engineering were the Dwemer and they are no longer present.

*lore-time*

If I remember correctly, planets in TES are the planes of the Gods, which are of infinite size.

The moons, Masser and Secunda, are the same, but they're the body of Shor/Lorkhan; the dead (dying?) God who devised Mundus (the mortal realm of existence).

In-short, the moons aren't big bits of rock orbiting the TES planet, they're the body of a God. O:

Just an interesting fact. O:

Well we have the space core in there now, so at the very least there are connections to the HL/Portal universe somewhere...

(Snif!) My Space Core stopped talking to me...was it something I said?

And there is a problem with the orbits because there is a problem with the phases as you can see there :

Lore: I thought I once read, somewhere, that the two counteract eachother, meaning tides are neutralised. Not that I can find it, nor even remember where I think I might have read it.

Tech: I haven't tried changing water level in script. My initial reaction is that you probably cannot (but if you can, then you could do so on playerentercell). Rivers and lakes will give you problems, though

In order to counteract each other, they would have to be at a constant 90 degree angle to each other, but they are often very close to each other in the sky.

The kicker.

That's only according to OUR laws of physics. Same can not be said for Nirn.
