Importing Real World Map?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 4:33 am

I remember reading back a few months ago about a detailed tutorial on how to import a real world map from google earth into GECK (Fallout creation kit). After an exhausting search I can't for the life of me find it again. Does anyone know what I'm referring to?

Has anyone imported a real world map into Skyrim yet?

No one has ever tried importing the State of Rhode Island into a skyrim game yet?

What would be the point may I ask? (I am new so go easy if this is a dumb question)

Do you mean to replace the map on Skyrim or actually replacing the world?

I guess you mean the heightdata? Without any real knowledge of Skyrims terrains system, but the steps should be like this. Experiment!

Find the coordinates for the location you want to import to Skyrim.
Plot them in http://www.gdem.aster.ersdac.or.jp/search.jsp site and download the correct DEM (Digital Elevation Models). You need to register but the heightmaps are free for educational purposes.
Convert to .raw with the correct specs. This can be done through http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem/microdem.htm which is free.
Import into Skyrim, however, this may be a real problem as the Creation Kit is a bit incomplete at the moment. In this forum section some 10 threads discuss importing of heightmaps and the problems associated with it!

Good luck!

Well, if you take a not so well known area in, say, the middle of Russia, Alaska or northern Scandinavia you can get realistic terrains for your fantasy world.

Oh so it would be importing an actual area to replace the skyrim world? or a cell in the world etc?

Most likely to replace, yes. Or at least add a substantial amount.

Importing real terrains just seems much more realistic and ads to the immersion factor, also it should make creating new worlds significantly faster if you don't have to mess around editing the terrain/hieghtmaps etc..

Do you expect to have a "complete" landscape after just importing a heightmap? Remember the flat rolling hills of Cyrodiil and Vvardenfell? I'm so glad Skyrim actually has mountains, use them

Yes, Finally figured out how to load a raw file and boom, insta crash in the CK every time. I'm going to try this in the GECK and see if I can get this to work.

God damnit, It also crashes GECK as well. I can't seem to load ANY raw file.

Does anyone happen to have a loadable .RAW file I can look at and compare with to see what I'm doing wrong?

I save the file as an image in microdem and then move that image to GIMP so I can save it in RAW form. It's set to 1024X1024. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if the queen mum will be offended when I import Charlies ear as a new landscape for Skyrim.

CK is nown to be quite, unstable, incomplete and infuriating. http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1356815-creating-new-worldspacesdiscussion-thread-5/ is a thread regarding creating new worldspaces. It might help you, it might not.
