Shadow Casting Lights Help

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 4:03 pm

Hello Everyone,

I was playing around with a mod I've been working on and I was able to set up a light over a campfire in a wilderness cell that casts shadows. The light flickers, the shadows move, and the overall effect is really nice. Recently, however, I noticed that the shadows no longer render, and when I check the reference in the render window, the marker is red and the light does not appear when I preview lighting.

Can anyone who has experience with using shadow casting lights, especially in the wilderness (where there are no room bounding boxes), explain why my lights are suddenly not working? Did I accidentally toggle something without realizing it?

You can only have 4 shadow casting lights rendered at any given time. If a light turns red and stops working, then you have reached the limit.

I know. Like I said, I had one shadow casting light that was working, and then suddenly it stopped working. Does anyone have anything helpful to add?

In the CK, goto File/Preferences and click on the shaders tab. Make sure the shadows box is checked. The CK sometimes unchecks this box for some reason....happened to me a couple of times.

Yeah, the problem isn't in the editor though, it's in the game. I mean, the light source isn't working in either, when it was before. Can anyone provide assistance?

One more bump, then it's back to the drawing board.

There must be another shadow casting light within render distance.

Hrrm. So I loaded up my mod in the editor, deleted the light, and placed a new ref. Turn on shadows, animation, sky, etc, and the light renders properly and casts shadows. Whew.

I save the plug-in, load it up in Skyrim, go to the cell with my light in it, and it doesn't cast shadows. I have all my graphics options on and this was working a few days ago. Could something have been done in the recent patch to either the CK or to Skyrim that would prevent shadow casting lights from working properly?

The sun casts shadows. What else casts shadows near your campfire?

Only the sun and my light source.

I think it's a problem with Skyrim itself at this point. The shadows render in the editor, and they animate, perfectly fine. When I launch the game is where I run into problems.
