When creating a new mod do I need to check the box next to both of these files?

Yeah, unless it's changed it was not mentioned in the first tutorial. But the picture shows the new plugin with both Skyrim.esm AND Update.esm as Parent Masters. But that brings up an interesting question. What if you have a plugin started and do NOT have Update.esm as a Parent Master? Can it be added with TESVEdit or TESnip and how do you do so? What are the repercussions for NOT having Update as a master?

If you're modifying forms in Update.esm, then yeah - you'll want to manually load it.
I'd avoid adding Update.ESM as a master unless A) your mod edits Update.ESM native forms or B) your mod conflicts with it (edits any of *http://i.imgur.com/3jOhY.png).

I have never used update.esm and zero issues so far with 4 player homes created.

What? So your houses dont disappear when u fast travel to them? I made a house and it sumtimes disappears when i fast travel to it and elements surrounding the house disappear too, if i switch it to esm, evrything works well BUT the original elements that were in the area are set back to where they were

what did u do?
