How to do a song?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:27 pm

The bard songs are all a lot more than 149 characters long...how exactly does the game string the dialog infos together to make a long song?

I've seen stuff on "invisible continues" but I'm still not 100% sure how to make em work right.

Scene use dialogue...

The bard songs are just <149 character segments. It's broken up just like all other dialogue. Listen to it, and you'll notice the awkward pauses every two lines in the song. That's it going to the next voice chunk. The instrument was just edited in with the same audio file as the voice.

what i meant by dialogue is the player dialogue tab, in which a prompt or player spoken line leads to a response from NPC, etc.

you can assemble a song using the dialogue tab (all of the song lyrics are found under sharedinfos) but the vanilla versions are handled by scenes (hence why you can initiate a bard to sing and freely walk away from it as the bard continues each line)

What I'm really after is a guy who randomly sings (Using the Misc tab infos) but so far he only sings the first verse over and over, I'll be adding stages to my "sing a song" quest to control verse order, but I'd still like to get him to sing more than one verse at a time.

If I was trying to do that I'd set up the bard singing thing in a scene with a trigger to set it off in a quest stage or a dialogue topic, etc. I think he would do what you want if it's in a scene. The vanilla bards do what they do in a scene (the quest is "BardSongs"). It seems like any kind of interesting dialogue (singing in the game is set up as dialouge) from the NPCs is done in a scene.

Yeah the only way to link together conversations (single lines spoken by an NPC), is with a scene. Or a chain or 'Say' commands, perhaps...

The character is a bit of a loon, so I figure having him belt out a few rounds of "A Capitol Ship" would be funny (Though I'd have to do some lyric rewriting, since there's no "England" or "Trains" or "Guns" in TES (At least not unless the Dwemer had them but nobody knows about it anymore)

So just have him say a random line from it, as an Idle (Under Misc tab). Then he will randomly say a line or two from it, which would still work and be funny. :D

if this is what you're after, i believe you could string all of the verses together in the player dialogue using invisible continue, and set it up as a Blocking Topic (which automatically replaces all the default hellos). the downside is, Blocking topics also "block" whatever dialogue trees you have in place

And he would only say the first info, unless the player actually engaged in dialogue with him. Then he would rattle off th rest.

Also, I can't seem to get invisible inputs to work... It just says '...' ingame, instead of hooking right into the next line like it should. (And did in NV...)

an invisible continue should link right next to the next one in the chain without an additional prompt, so long as the invisible continue checkbox is checked and the additional dialogue is linked under the link window

alternatively you can try stacking multiple dialogues into a single response text window

Oh, there's a box you have to check. That would explain that!!
