Kicking a horse

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:08 pm

Horses- We've been kicking at this one since day 01 and hopefully it's not officially dead yet.
  • We the players of Skyrim, though proud people, can also be attributed with a sense of compassion and pity like when we ride our horse towards a distant location (because fast travel is for lamers) and look behind us, and lo, we detect a speck of a visage fading into the horizon as the gap between us and them widens. We immediately recognize due to the familiar and frequent circumstance that it is Lydia (should she have not made it to Sovngarde yet) trailing behind and likely to be attacked viciously and mauled to death by a bear soon enough. We breath a sigh of regret as we recognize how inconsiderate we've been. Companions should either (1) have their own horse even if that means having to shell out another 1000g or (2) ride in the b*t*h seat.
  • Horses of Skyrim, lay down thy hooves unless the threat is no greater than a common wolf or skeever. If it is a dragon, then run the f**k away and spare us some coinage and remorse. Though you may be proud beasts as is your owners who ride upon thee, you most assuredly have nothing to protect your delicate hide from even the least powerful of assaults. Horse armor will come in a future DLC and to every sensible persons dismay, thy forums shall floodeth over with threads declaring outrage and unspeakable retaliation. Copies of Skyrim will burneth in a pyre of rebellion towards the $2.99 price tag. Plastic Alduin statues will be hurled into Bethesda HQ windows (minus their cheap hollow bases), successfully shattering the 6 inch thick polycarbonate laminated bulletproof glass with it's high-quality PVC structure. Alas, such an attack would provoke The Howard as he unleashes his secret weapon and reanimates the small dragon statues to do his nefarious bidding. Until this prophesy unfurls, I beg of you to act in a way that comes natural to a naturally skittish creature. Run away, horse, run away. When this feature goes live, that only means we will need:
  • Whistling is the production of sound by means of carefully controlling a stream of air flowing through a small hole. Whistling can be achieved by creating a small opening with one's lips and then blowing or svcking air through the hole. Whistling has long been used as a specialized communication. Such a use was commonly utilized in order to direct attention to oneself. There are many examples in more fanciful depictions where whistling called forth a loyal steed to a riders side. ...........Please teach our Dovakiin how to whistle for the purpose of calling our horse (only if it is within close proximity). An alternate use could be to call our companion away from what they are doing, you know, like when they keep fighting when you know you should flee.
Thank you

I approve! I don't know why followers either don't have horses or that we can't buy one and simply give them the bridle. I also wish we could, at the very least, speak to NPCs we meet on the road. I mean, when that merc calls me a milk-drinker, let me hear it whilst on my high horse!

I'd love to have my companion on the horse with me, and I grew up on a farm, and I have trained a few horses, and I have never had a horse attack me like the horses in skyrim does. they usually just pretend to be calm untill you unsuspectingly walk behind them and then bam! kicks you in the face, and if they are scared, which they would be if a bear came after them, they'd run. thats why you use a whip too by the way, the horse will try to outrun whatever it is that tries to hit it :P

Well written! For sure the current system has disadvantages ;) I never ride horses in Skyrim. The mouse-keyboard controlls are not to my liking, and the third person view annoys me. In Oblivion only the north was difficult (with the mountains) but this time almost the whole of the land is hilly and mountainous. I tried, but I drove the horse like a drunk  Poor animal. I got off and let my legs do the work. Well, not exactly my legs, but you get the point.

We got spoiled with Oblivion mods that allowed companions to travel on horses, besides I think it toughens them up.

Seriously, I can't wait for the first companion mod that scripts it so that followers can ride, oversight on Beth's part imo.

We have been spoiled.

Still, by now, Bethesda should have given the Follower an ability to ride horses even if it costs you an extra 1000 gold. Although, in the old days, the serf of a Knight would always follow on foot not only in Europe but in Medieval Japan too. So it`s not so far-fetched.

It`s all moot for me though since I hate the 3rd person view. Dunno why they could not have allowed 1st as in Oblivion.

Just about everything with horses is screwed in Skyrim so I had to put my horse down via Sabretooth Tiger and Bear.

My Followers thanked me.

ten(well nine) reasons horses svck:

1.they fight things?! its a horse its a flight animal ffs.
2.followers are left in the dust...cant they get on to horses look phat im sure theyd be fine.
3.horses follow you around like a [censored] shadow its annoying. why cant u tie up or stable your horses.
4.horses cant be called forth, come on beth u never played zelda or reddead?
5.horses have no armour or baggage? no storage just the inexsplicable ability to carry me even if i just fill up on a thousand cheese wheels?
6. i hate third person it spoils the mood for me to suddenly see the back of my head when i was exspecting to see the back of the horses...
7. u cant fight from horses, not even with a bow or cast? swords would be alot of work, so they are let off that but bows and magic is a done deal. Again did you not play zelda on the n64 like last millenium?!
8. u cant name your horse even tho you can name a the rags you bind your feet in because they are sore from walking due to horses svcking...
9.like every town has a stable but like no one rides horses? strangly again they made each town have its own colour horses? but id like a choice now at whiterun, not once ive walked alaround the world...
10.and i saved the most important one till last why is there no cooking recipie for horse burgers then theyd be worth somthing... is there even horses meat? i forget. lol

What gets me about this one is when you buy the horse the guy tells you you can probably rename it.

But you can`t!

You can rename it....through the console menu (if it's like Oblivion. I do agree though; false advertisemant on the horse sellers part. Though the perspective is a nuisance, for me, it is a minor one and as long as they fixed the rest I put in the OP then I'd be pleased as punch.

Fighting from horses with ranged weapons/magic....yes! Why not? I know, Todd, you think jousting isn't fun and fine I'll give you that but it's not jousting with magic involved. If people want to make it an OP experience by kiting then (1) let them or (2) use your creative minds to come up with a solution (ex. damage is less powerful on horseback, your horse is more exposed to taking damage)..

Time to finish dinner, BBL!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail solved the companion and horse dilemma already.
Why no pay attention to pop culture Bethesda?
