[3DS Max] Why does my texture look like this?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:19 am

I got some custom blood textures in using 3DS max but I'm having a weird issue with one of the exported Nif Trishapes.

I UV mapped 3 blades in 3ds max for blood textures and two came out fine.

This is the normal working one:

But one came out like this:

They're identical front and back, but for some reason it looks odd for the second one. Like its semi transparent on the front, but the back looks okay.

I used a push modifier on all the models, and when I look at it in Nifskope it looks fine, no clipping or anything. So I'm kind of stumped about this. Any idea why this might be?

Edit: Here's how it looks in Nifskope: http://i.imgur.com/8pI8a.png

As a side note: I also tested using the normal working mesh in the place of the second one and that worked fine too. I dont mind using shared pieces, but I still want to know
why its happening so I can fix this sort of problem if it occurs again in the future.

If anyone knows anything it'd be really helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Well, since the blades look the same on both of those, could you just copy the blood mesh from the working one to the one that doesn't work and see if it's still happening?

Yeah I tried that and it worked fine, thats what I was writing above but...I'm more curioous about why it looks like that in the first place.

So if I get that problem with another model (in fact I did last night!), I would know how to fix it =/.

Edit: I figured out what it was :P.

When I used Weld vertices, it welded some vertices together that it shouldn't have, and it warped the mesh a bit. That caused problems in the mesh in game. Fixed it by welding them one at a time. :)

Nevermind I lied, that wasn't the full fix. It worked once but it messed up for another mesh.

I found out what caused it but I still have no idea how to fix it.

When I copy the trishape data over, it "works" until I change the vertex colors from No to Yes, when I change the vertex colors, a huge portion of the mesh disappears into the middle of my blade.
But vertex colors are necessary for the blood to show up at all. No idea how to fix this at all @_@.

Please halp?

Edit: Actually, the mesh doesn't disappear into my blade...but a portion of the mesh actually like, becomes blank... very weird...

Alright I figured out what the problem is. When you export the blood mesh from a blade for copying the trishapde data over, first you have to enable vertex colors in the blood mesh FIRST. Then click the "refresh icon" under "yes" for vertex colors, and it will refresh the proper vertex colors. Then you paste it over and it works perfectly :).
