Just get ebony mail.. then you're an even better sneaker than light armored characters.

Is it cheesy? Yes.

Put muffle on your boots and it won't matter.

It doesnt make sense, but its possible. Just get muffle on your boots like this dude said, and take the perks in your sneak tree. "muffled movement" will be essential for you.

I'm wearing Heavy Armor on my character, and I have no problems sneaking. It might seem counterintuitive, but it still works. There are perks on the sneak tree that will help, and theres always the muffle spell/enchantment.

I sneak in heavy armour, but don`t use any of the silly stuff like `muffle` whatever. So it feels quite realistic. I never manage to sneak up close to anyone in my armour and that`s how I like it.

My character is primarily a sword and shield guy, using Plate armour, and I use sneak religiously. I've never put a perk into it, and the only 'advantage' that I use is a muffle enchantment on both my boots and Lydia's.

With that muffle, it only helps when you are actually moving, rather than being a blanket soundproofing. I've been detected changing weapons, treading on things or knocking things over, etc. And it doesn't help you if you move into the light.

From a gameplay perspective it does not matter. It's your game and you can play it how you like. If you want to fight giants at level 5 dressed in a pink tutu and using a hagraven feather to tickle them to death that would be your choice and therefore it would still be cool. You'll enjoy the view at least. TES games have always aimed at giving you the freedom to play any way you want and since it's a single player game, yours is the only opinion that should matter.

From a roleplay perspective I wouldn't sneak in heavy armour though. As a thief or assassin you're not suppose to get into situations where you would need heavy armour to protect you. Illusion would be a much better alternative in this regard because you could just befuddle their minds if they get too close for comfort or simply vanish. But it depends on the character you play of course. This is not to say a heavy armour character would not know how to sneak though. Nothing stops a warrior from stripping down and scouting a room in order to plan ahead.

This and muffled shoes, combine it with the spell muffle if you feel like it. Then if you get the sneak perk 'silence' you will be a sneak god, better than any cloth or light armored person could hope to be.

My Orsimer is a nightblade. Since Orsimer are know for their heavy armor, it make sense that my Orsimer Nightblade use heavy armor, and use her magic to conceal even better.

Ebony mail is great but has a nasty bug... The moment the enemies go on 'search mode' (eye-cursor half open) the mail unique enchantment will be turned off and substituted with a defensive spell. This, in turn, lowers the stealth ability and 90% of the time the player will become plainly visible.

The 'stealth ability' of a character is heavily influenced by the weight of the equipped clothes and armor. If you don't have enchanted items, it's better to sneak naked that in a full suit of armor.

With sneak bonuses there is no reason to use heavy armor with an nightblade/thief.

Sneak can de done by anyone. Light armour is better at low level, but if you have all associated perks it is totally feasible for a Tank to sneak.

It actually makes perfect sense, given what the guy who gives you Ebony Mail represents.

Boethia loves heavy-armored sneaks.

Why doesn't it make sense? Read Hallgard's Tale, and check out one of the cooler Daedric Princes, Boethia.

I guess the reason is two fold. One part tradition and one part common sense. Traditionally (Since the first D&D tabletop games), rogue / assassin characters have always been limited to light armour because common sense dictates that even just lifting your arm to scratch your nose would make a hell of a noise when you're decked out in metal plates from head to toe.

Some people can discard common sense in favour of gameplay. Others can't. Both sides have an equal right and opportunity in Skyrim to play how they want.

Edit: Just to clarify, those bound by tradition considers leather the only viable "light armour" for stealth. Elven and Glass armour would also be impractical.
