Shadow "ribbing" effect issues

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:41 am

Pics speak more than words: http://i45.tinypic.com/23ohfr.jpg

And here: http://i46.tinypic.com/k3kqx3.jpg

Even worse picture: http://i46.tinypic.com/261zsds.jpg

Just in front of the tree, and just on the white patch of snow (centre of image) , there is this flickering shadow "ribbing" effect going on and i can't figure out what may of causes it, i recently just used the texture optimiser for my dds/nifs and for the BSA's as well, could this of caused the issues? I re-installed all my texture/landscape mods and the issues is still here.

Any ideas? The flickering is especially annoying.

Have you messed with your ini settings? Shadow Casting light objects cause that when the shadow depth bias is set very low on accident.

That makes me think that the 'sun' has a depth bias too and it was messed up at some point.

Yep, try deleting (or renaming) your ini and let Skyrim create a new one...see if it still happens.

Ok that worked making a new INI, so what do reckon is the setting that is causing it?

bDrawLandShadows=1

Is that setting the cause of the problem or the setting it should be? I also have this shadow problem so a confirmation of a solution would be helpful. I currently have this set to 0 in my Skyrimprefs.ini which is reccomended by the STEP guide by The Compiler:

bDrawLandShadows= (keep 0!!!)
*This will add land shadowing, which means two things: more shadow striping bug, and less performance (2-3 FPS drop). Do not touch this, also if many guides recommend enabling it.

I am more inclinded to trust The Compiler's guide on this unless he says differently.

Artorius.

Well i'll be, your right! It was the land shadows issues causing the striping how bizzare ive never seen it be that bad before only now, but great :), ill keep it off as it doesnt do anything spectacular anyway and more importantly it solves the issues, thanks all :).

This fix does not always work for everybody in every situation. I too had striping with LandShadows set to 0. Later I disbaled shadows altogether. And in situations where the game forces shadows (Helgen, for example) I still see striping.
