Making someone inherit only appearance from a template base?

I'd like to make my soldiers inherit the appearance of one of the random bandit's that Beth already has set up, but none of the checkboxes say that, and the wiki doesn't say either. How do I make it so that only the random appearance/race is inherited from the bandits?

Set the template, tick the "Use Traits" check box, untick the "Use Traits" check box.
