I'm quite sure I've seen a thread somewhere around here which explains and guides you through the process of creating a worldspace with functional LOD, etc.
But I cannot find it. Have I only dreamed, or does it exist?

Don't remember there being a tutorial as such ... there's a couple of video tutorials in the sticky? ... and maybe a thread kinda about making that video (somewhere)
