Is MQ linear? Killing Paarthurnax or not?

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:40 pm

Hi

I was presented with the option of killing Paarthurnax dragon, but I've chosen not to. Now I have completed the MQ, killing Alduin.

Is the killing-Paarthurnax-quest just an addition to the MQ or will it result the main story turning a total different path?

Are there any point of no return aspects of the main quest, or is it all just linear?

Thanks

Doesn't really matter if you kill him or not. This isn't the sort of game known for far reaching consequences, that could haunt you for the rest of your playthrough. Gameworld and inhabitants are mostly static.

I don't know. My Redguard female - who I'm rolling next - seems to think it's a noble cause.

You seem to like nothing more than complain about how dreadful Skyrim is. May I ask why you play a game you apparently don't like?
There are consequences. The Greybeards permanently shut you out, but the Blades embrace you as one of their own. You'll be able to go on Dragon Hunts with them, I'm fairly sure they can point you in the direction of word walls, and Esbern will make you a (currently bugged) potion out of dragon bones and scales.

I'm sorry you see it that way. I prefer to see myself as honest in my disappointment. Reassuring someone that they haven't done anything wrong, when they in fact have, and letting them go on their merry way to make the same mistakes again and again is far more harmful than stinging them a little with the truth.

Anyway, those aren't real consequences. They are completely available to you before you make the decision, you can do everything you just listed until there are no longer any word walls to find, and you have grown tired of hunting dragons...and then make your decision at a later time so long as you hold out on finishing Alduin's bane. The decision ultimately comes down to if you want two dragons hanging around at the throat of the world or one.

I agree with you. I would rather be informed whether my actions have any profound long-term consequences or not. Personally I don't think the game is worth replaying all over, just to see minor differences of dialogue or some alternative outcome quest-branches.

I have spent over 150 hours playing Skyrim and there are so many more things I can do. For instance right now I can't decide whether I should keep playing my 41 warrior and finish as many side-quests as I can, including all of the guilds, or if I should start another character to take some seperate paths. The problem is that with the new character I'll have an empty bag and an unexplored map which limits my fast travel options. Sigh...

I have a similar amount of played time, however I find myself in a situation where...I feel less and less inclined to play, as I run into issues or come upon documented quest chains that require patches to correct and make completable. I find the game has zero actual replayability, even their hyped up radiant story system is not as random as they touted it would be.

You can literally see just about everything there is to see in the game with a single character, and the combat is not entertaining enough alone to keep me playing. I wanted to like the game, I really did, but I suppose I should not have marathoned Dark Souls and Fallout New Vegas directly before hand.

900+ hr's, 7 different characters and I've redone the MQ 2 times, the companions 3 times.

The game is what you make of it. I'll probably be playing it for a long time to come, though I probably will take short breaks here and their to play other games.

Of course I have specific goals for each of my characters and don't try and do the whole game with one. Which would I think make combat boring after awhile as the character gets stronger.

Each to their own though.

Edit: I should have put in that I have done every other questline at least once except DB which I am just starting.

Skyrim is very replayable. each playthrough is different even with a similar character.

even if you go to the same places in order the loot and the enemies may be different.

a better weapon and or armor will change how you play. you can do and get away with more.

i have played many characters and the game still excites and challenges me.

it is also the most beautiful game that i have every played which doesn't hurt either.

edited for spelling

my only problem is I love the game but the quests seemed rushed. There are some good dicisions u have to pick in the game, and as far as the paar blades I believe they shoulda spent more time on it. Its like its almost pushing ya to spare paar but to find reasons to kill him, u have to look up books and research lore blablah and hell sometimes to just spare him and sse at the emd that their reasons for helpong even though he helps might be a lil sinister might not. They didnt give to much info for both sides to really justify their actions without being a boookworm on ur toon lol. Other than that, long term we dont know bc the full game aint out , but short term all that notice that action is blades and greybeards. Either choicd is the right one, do what makes u or ur charector happy or what they would do.
