I was used to press C to zoom directly in to the model in CK viewport , now it instead toggles a green gizmo that translates the object but doesn't zoom in anymore , any idea why ? perhaps some changed settings I am missing?

C was change camera position. Which has now been swapped with Y. (Yay!)

You're thinking of V, which is still the same.
