Bookshelves broken since 1.6

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 3:03 pm

As the title says, all of my bookshelves have suddenly broken since the recent patch. I had previously tested every single shelf across all of my mods - and I mean all of them, not just the original shelf before duplicating it.
I even went back to the tutorial on CK wiki and followed it to the letter to make a new one but still no joy.
I have tried keeping the book shelf container away from the physical shelf, however when I look at the shelf and get the activate option, no menu opens.
I moved the container forward so looking at the shelf I see both the activate book shelf and also search book shelf options - this opens up the menu (when looking at the search option) however the message states that 0 books can be added (even when none have been added to start with).

I figured I must be doing something completely wrong and went over all steps and links and keywords etc again, however they are definitely correct.
I downloaded http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11618 and duplicated a bookshelf from there but I get the exact same error as when I create my own from scratch.

Is anyone else having the same issue or have any idea what is going on?

Is there anything that works?

You should report in the bug thread.

I haven't noticed this but I use http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10891 in my playtesting (and general playing) so I suppose that is why.

Yeah, that mod replaces the bookshelf container script entirely.

I checked my game, and my bookshelves work fine. I only tested the vanilla bookshelves though; not sure if you're talking about only custom bookshelves.

My Skyrim - Misc.bsa (the archive that contains the scripts) was modified on May 25, which is when I downloaded the 1.6 beta. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I can tell which of those have been modified. Also, since it doesn't include the source scripts, I can't tell what's there. The loose script source files that come with the CK haven't been changed at all.

Bookshelves seem to be working fine for me as well, including the one custom shelf I've done so far.

The bookshelf script wasn't one of the updates as far as I'm aware.

No problems here either with the vanilla script and the bookcases from Modders Resource-Weapon Racks-Bookshelves-Plaques-Mannequins.

I am referring to both shelves I have created following the CK wiki tutorial (I don't use unlimited bookshelves) and the ones from the linked mod as well as shelves I copied/pasted from within vanilla houses.
The thing that has really got me scratching my head is that ALL of these shelves worked pre patch and I have not done anything to them since the mods were completed, so I can't understand how they suddenly don't work.

@Black RL - not sure I should bother reporting in bug thread if I am the only person experiencing this and noone else seems to have the issue

As the title says, all of my bookshelves have suddenly broken since the recent patch.
I can't be of any help here, as I have had the habit of completely avoiding bookshelves since they were borked very early on, even if that was fixed.

However, it struck me, that there have been quite a few "recent patches":
- Game 1.5.26 -> 1.6.89
- CK 1.5.24 -> 1.6.91
- CK 1.6.91 -> 1.6.89

In case there is something going on here, it might be useful for others to know if you can state your current versions and pinpoint which patch you are referring to. Have you, for instance, edited bookshelves under CK 1.6.91? Armors and races, for example, became incompatible with the current game after having gone through that CK version, and would have lost some information even if re-loaded to the current CK.

Unless the version has changed since I made my initial post, I am using version 1.6.89.0. I had made all existing bookshelves prior to this patch, however I couldn't tell you which patch was current when they were created. I created the new shelves last night, then went and tested all the older shelves in my other mods before posting on here.

Well, perhaps what I kind of suggested might not be relevant, then. It is just, that CK 1.6.91 apparently makes use of new and improved data structures, which 1.6.89 does not understand (neither game nor CK), and the extent of those changes is unknown, so any work done on 1.6.91 could be questionable and lose data when opened in 1.6.89.

Thanks anyways :)
I may end up trying out the unlimited bookshelves mod, but I find it bizarre that only one other person said they were having trouble with bookshelves.

I am also having some trouble with bookshelves, though it could be me not knowing what I'm doing. I'll post a more detailed description of the issues once I do some tests in a little bit. For now I can say that I followed http://www.creationkit.com/Tutorial_Bookshelves and so far everything works until I go past the 4 bookshelf "limit". The bookshelves that use a keyword that I added do not work.

Yeah that's the tutorial I was following. What is this 4 bookshelf limit?

If you use the method in that tutorial then you'll notice that there are only 4 BookShelfTrigger## keywords available (You need the keywords when linking the container to one of the triggers). So if you strictly follow that tutorial you will only be able to get 4 bookshelves. However, in the summary section on that page you'll find this...

If you desire more than 4 bookshelves in one cell, then you can add additional keywords under WorldData to obtain more references (BookShelfTrigger05 and so on). The 5th and so on BookShelfContainers will have to have their references manually set to the new values under Scripts in properties to the new keywords (unless you want to do some script editing).

I tried to do this but with my very limited knowledge of scripting and properties I made it worse :biggrin:.

I have no idea what that part of the summary is supposed to mean. The bookshelf container script only accepts a maximum of 4 bookshelf triggers. Adding more triggers using new keywords won't do a thing, since it's not scripted to check for them.

It's very possible to have more than 4 bookshelves in one cell. Just have more than 1 bookshelf container. Actually, I have 1 bookshelf container per shelf (ie row of books). I never link more than 1 bookshelf trigger to a bookshelf container.*

The bookshelf container is only scripted to handle a maximum of 18 books. Therefore, if my shelves are long enough to fit in 18 books, then it makes no sense to put in more triggers, since there won't be any books actually in those triggers.

*This is all before I wrote my own bookshelf script.

i don't have any help for this issue (i'm now afraid to edit my mods or even play the game :confused: ), but i highly recommend trying the Unlimited Bookshelves mod mentioned above. using it in your own mods, not only can you place anything in the shelf, but you only need 5 (five!) items to create a working shelf - two of DefaultBookShelfBookMarker, one PlayerBookShelfContainer, one PlayerBookShelfClickTrigger and one PlayerBookShelfTrigger. link & edit them the same way as mentioned in the tutorial and you're done! (i still keep the shelf & markers rotated 1 degree off a 90 degree angle since i don't know if that issue has been fixed or not..) if you add a shelf along a flat surface (like the top of a bookcase) then you'll also want collision markers so things don't go flying off (some odd-shaped things probably will anyway). plus, the mod author has added stacking capabilities for some items like ingots and it's fun to watch them shelve themselves! :biggrin: oh, and the books also shelve according to the actual widths, not the marker width which is set to the fattest book in the game = much neater, imho...

yes, i'm a total pack rat so these extras make a huge difference to me - how did you guess? :wink:

hope this helps some!

Alright I see what you're talking about. So I think that tutorial is trying to imply that you need a unique bookshelftrigger number for each container, or it makes it sound like you do. Maybe the some of the wording in that tutorial needs to be changed. I'll probably use the Unlimited Bookshelves in the end anyways.

Update - I have downloaded Unlimited Bookshelves which works fine. This still doesn't answer why the vanilla script wasn't working in the first place though, but I am definitely happy I can now use my shelves!
