High Elf or Breton.

I personally prefer Bretons.

I'm sure that it doesn't make a lot of difference.

Yes, certain races have bonuses that might be of use to a particular class but that doesn't mean any other races are useless.

My main character is an imperial and i'm also playing a conjurer. Chose that race because i wanted to try something different to what i played in oblivion (dark elf and breton). Went for what i liked the look of and allowed my character to develop without forcing any particular playstyle. Once i realised how awesome it was to raise zombies and conjure daedra there was no other choice but to be a conjurer.

Have to say i have barely usec the voice of the emporer power but it's alwys nice to find a little extra gold in continers.

I say, see what you like the look of and go for it.

Have fun, it's a great play style!

Bretons and Altmer are the go-to mage characters. Personally, for a necromancer type, I would go for a Dunmer.

Altmer get +50 magicka (that's like 5 free levels of magicka!) and an amazing magicka regen power

Breton get hardy magic resistance and can turn into absolute mage killers once a day.

Either works... but Altmer's racials are always useful, while Bretons are FAR more useful against mages, but largely useless the rest.

In the end... it really doesn't matter to much.

What does matter?

The Ritual Stone.... a must have for any true Necromancer build ;)

breton for any playthrough, any class, any situation. most racial bonuses are really pitiful and exist solely as flavor (waterbreathing anyone?).

Atlmer racials are hardly pitiful

once a day you can super regen for 60 seconds and get a FAT bonus to your most important stat.

how is that pitiful?

Breton racials are good too no doubt, but certainly not the only choice.

Oh yah... and he can benefit from the Altmer's hidden height bonus to land speed and melee damage

I said most, not all or all except breton.

From a optimization perspective, +50 magicka is roughly equal to +25 magic resistance in terms of enchantment slots, however, MR can only be imbuned on amulets, rings, shields while magicka can be imbuned on all those as well as headgear but is still generally far less useful. Magicka and magicka regneration is also mostly useless as dedicated mages will enchant there gear to reduce costs in to zero. this is even more true as conjurers do not need to expend mana constantly like a destructionist would.
as for the highborn power- i must have used it maybe 4 times in the course of 200 hours of play. others may get more use out of it but for the reason listed above, it is a moot point. Bretons also get dragonskin which is 50%? magic absorption.

Early on, altmer shines but the magicka bonuses will eventually become useless mid and late game. MR resistance on the other hand, will always be useful.

Overall, breton is superior to altmer for a conjurer and just about any other class/build.

pitiful races include, khajiit (lol melee claws), argonian (water breating), wood elf (command animal, really?).

water breathing has saved my life on more than one occasion (not to mention argonian's other racial is the most useful in the game for any class, save someone with only 100 health [they wont last long enough to use it]), and command animal is extremly useful in a lot of situations

Gif your comparing facials do not leave some out for instance argonians also have histskin which regens health and it is insane.

@voice: I play with 0 points in hp on master if I pop histskin before I'm hit instead of one hit I can take up to like ten at the mo now that's an example of it's power.

Play the race u like the most and can have fun with there all good. Of course argonians rule though.
