1.4 and multiple saves, PS3

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:16 am

I've heard of a bug which essentially deletes/overwrites your old save game on the PS3 when you start a new character. Has the latest patch fixed this? I'm scared to make a new character for fear of losing my old one... I know I can just make a new profile on the PS3, but doing that for every new character is not ideal. Has this been fixed?

Thanks in advance :)

If you're scared of losing your old save, then why don't you just plug in a USB into your ps3 and transfer the save file over to the USB. That way, if you want to play that character again in the future, you can just transfer the save file back to your ps3 and resume playing. That's what I did with one of my old characters that I don't really play anymore, though I do plan to replay him in the future.

This is what happens :

Skyrim creates a default save called 'Prisoner' in Helgen...

Most people use only save and repeatedly overwrite it.

If you do this when you start a new character, Skyrim will continue to operate this one save and save over it automatically as 'Prisoner' in Helgen.

This may be the perfect time to recommend to you to use more than one save, even if it does get fixed.

Good luck.

What? Creating a new game overwrites your last previous save?

A similar bug was on the 360 I strongly advocated against this bug for a few months and for the 360 so far it seems fixed. Text it by making at least twenty saves and see if you can scroll down, and try to overwrite one save and see if it overwrites the wrong save, I just tested last night.

Ohh... this is a crafty one. :P

See one post above for the scenario, I didn't see anything in the release notes for the update so this may likely still be an issue.

Or :

Creating a new game overwrites the default save?

Why, yes, yes it does.

Yeah, I tested this the other day the game stil claims the same save. I had one from way before that I never deleted or overwrote, started a new game in 1.4 and the same save got updated.

Fixed occasional issue where overwriting an existing save would fail

That was in the notes, I think they may have worked on more than it said.

On the 360 there was some serious issues with the save files, if they trailed off screen they disappeared but they still existed but you could not scroll down. Then if you tried to overwrite wave 608 it would overwrite save 603 instead and it seems so far that the saves are working properly I have my fingers crossed.

Overwrites the default save? Which one is that?

It begins life as 'Prisoner'... then becomes the name of the character you create.

In which case it can become lost in the myriad of other saves people make, some people miss it by chance and others are not so lucky. Other people never create more than one save.

Best bet is to create a completely new save and leave the 'Prisoner' save alone, until such a time as it gets fixed, or just make a duplicate save before you start a new character.

One will always remain.

I've made 3 new characters since the patch and all of my older saves are still there.

Confirmation, excellent and thanks.

Think I'm still gonna duplicate saves though just in case, even if Bethesda sends me a freaking notarized letter. :P

Thanks for the replies! So it's only the prisoner save which gets overwritten? That's a relief, I still have that save and haven't touched it. So my other saves should be ok, good to know.

Thanks for the tip about the USB as well. Think I'll definitely do that, since there are plenty of other bad things which could happen to my save games!
