Progressive Night Vision

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:20 am

It makes absolutely no sense to me when I gotta tell my Khajiit when to see in the dark, and when not to...

It would be reasonably easy to make a progressive night vision for Khajiits and other nocturnal states (vampire, werewolf...). When it becomes darker, the eyes progressively compensate by widening the pupil to allow more light in. The result is a vision that allows a great vision of the surroundings even at very low light, like in the night, but you still can't see if there is no light at all.

It would be great if there was at least an option to make Night Vision progressive and permanent. One should not need to use a "power" to see in the dark, and for a limited time!!! And by permanent, I mean that in the day it is not activated, but activates automatically when it becomes darker.

Make Night Vision :
-Permanent
-Adaptable (progressive)

Yes. I always found it silly that Night Eye was a power rather than a active effect. due to that ive never used it. not to mention is horrendous time limit.

It is still better in Skyrim than in Oblivion because now you can decide when you turn it off. In Oblivion, it lasted for a certain time and if you like got out of the dungeon before it finished you were just all blinded by the sun and you could do nothing but wait.

I actually like this idea, since it adds realism. However I don't know how it would be possible to easily make it adapt to dynamic lighting changes e.g. during a thunderstorm.

Well in scenarios like during a thunderstorm, the Khajiit would still be blinded by lightning since it still takes some time for the eye to adapt. So we could rule out the thunderstorms of the adaptive night vision.

Im happy as it is. There are times when i don't want night-vision, even when it is dark. And what do you know of khajiit physiology? They might have special natural "night vision lens" that they can activate whenever they want. But hey, a toggle certainly would not harm me.

It's a good idea.

Real cats have permanently their "night vision" after all

two out of three of my characters have been khajiit and having to keep using it is a pain. if it needs to be a power it should be infinite like a toggle power, the time limit is stupid.

The idea behind this is mainly to vary a little the gaming experience between character species. Right now, every race basically feels the same.

Serious question, unlike my last post, how long does it take for your eyes to adjust? I mean, when you're on the surface during the day and you look into the sky, it takes a few seconds for your sight to fully adjust. Same goes for when you look back down afterwards

That's approximately it, I haven't read papers on the matter, but yup... it takes around 1 second for your eye to adjust slightly, and it can take up to 45 minutes to see correctly in the dark, for *human eyes*, not cats'. If we can put cat as a relative approximation of a Khajiit, I guess it would be around a few seconds to see clearly from a bright day to a dark dungeon. As for the gameplay, I think that a few seconds of transition is quite the max.

Anyway, there are no real dark dungeons in Skyrim like there was in Oblivion, and that's a real shame!

I really wish they had more stuff like this. For one, spamming Night Eye is just kind of tedious, and it's not something a cat has to do. Even so, the fact Werewolves don't have access to Night Eye in human form makes no sense. You hear all the werewolves talking about the abilities being constant, not just limited to their transformed states. It'd be cool to see Argonians having clearer vision underwater, since they are amphibious, and for that matter, completely underwater ruins for you to explore (sure you might not be able to fight, but it'd be cool to come across a sunken castle or something.

I also want dark dungeons.

I completely agree that the waterbreathing ability of Argonians is practically useless in the game.
