New Skyrim Player With a Few Questions...

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:55 pm

1. For some reason, no matter how many skill-ups I get, I only ever get one perk. This means that it takes five fricking levels just to max out the FIRST PERK OF A SKILL. PLEASE tell me it isn't supposed to work like that.

2. As a mage, I'm constantly travelling between Winterhold and my soon-to-be home city, Riverwood. Any suggestions on how to move faster?

3. My other charcter is a Khajiiti Stormcloak Assasin/Thief. I want him to specialize in archery, but I can't seem to kill my foes before they reach me and deal melee damage. This isn't so much of a concern right now, as I'm still just fighting Mudcrabs and Wolves, but it will be when I'm fighting Dragons, Giants and the like. Is there a perk that makes you move faster while backing up, or makes you draw your bow faster?

0. Really?

1. That is five levels of the same perk. You can move on deeper into a tree without taking the first five perks.
2. Fast travel is instantaneous.
3. There is a perk that allow you to move faster with the bow yes.
If you do not intend to play your thief with stealth you can use the "Archer" class
Marksman
One-handed
Block
Light armour
If you use stealth you can just snipe your enemies, even bosses.

But, the first five is where you get all the power from.

1. The perk system does not work well. I wish it did, but it doesn't.

2. Fast travel

3. Yes for drawing arrows faster. I don't know about the other one.

0. Yes, really. Look. At. The. Title. "New Skyrim Player." You expected that I'd know all of this?

1. You didn't answeer my question at all. I KNOW I can move on, but I want the powee of the first five perks. Just tell me if there's a way to get more than one perk per level.

2. Well, DUH. I'm playing Skyrim for realism, not to instantly teleport. I don't like fast travel. It detracts from the experience.

3. Thank you for actually giving me a straight answer.

Since you can only pick the first perk at each major skill milestone, then it takes way more than 5 Character Levels to get all 5 of the "Doubler Perks". In other words, you can pick the first one at Level 20, but the next one has to wait until skill level 40 before you can choose it.

Note, you don't need all the Perks in a skill. Just pick the ones that make sense to your character.

If you don't want to fast travel, buy a horse from a stable.

I guess you're the kind of a player who won't be able to live without mods :)

1. You'll only ever get one perk per level in vanilla game. And believe me, it's enough - it's true that the most important perk in a weapon skill tree is the first one, but you can't advance it too fast anyway; there are skill requirements, so you can take the first tier as you start the game, then you have to wait until your skill reaches 20, 40, 60 and 80 IIRC. So you'll only be able to max out the first perk near the end of the game.
The thing is, you don't need all tiers right away. As you progress, your enemies will get tougher, but at the beginning you'll do well with just the second or third tier of the perk.

2. Use a horse (which is a pain) or use carriages. You can run to Whiterun and take a carriage from there. Unfortunately, there is no permanent carriage in Winterhold, so you'd probably have to run/ride a horse. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9544

1. One perk per level, but if you're just interested in boosting some of your skills, enchanting your armor works great too
2. If you don't want to fast travel you can buy a horse or become a werewolf (werewolves can sprint really fast) to get around quicker. But as for making Riverwood your home, I hope you know there is no player house that can be bought there. You can marry one of the locals tho and move in with her.

1.one perk per level yes
2. horse and carridge or fast travel (this works only if you have been to the place already)
so just exploring is the best way
3. this has been answered and you are happy with the answer

I did read your title, that is why I assumed that you did not know about fast travel; hence the "Really?".

About the perk, you have to level the skill further to be able take all five of them. However, the effectiveness of the skill also increases as the skill level increases, thus the perks are "extra power" in a sense. Just take whatever perks you want until you have leveled a skill enough to take the next of those perks.

About the fast travel: take the horse carriage from Winterhold to Whiterun then walk the last part to Riverwood. Alternatively you could just live in Whiterun and take the carriage between the cities.

Thnaks for being so specific, it helped a lot. Oh, and about the mods, I'll just cope. All I wanted to know was the limitations of what I could do.

Also, Sheepdog, I've never played CoD. Sorry if I came off that way.

But, the first five is where you get all the power from.

But if you put perk points into "Critical Shot", "Quick Draw", and "Slow Time", then there's no reason any enemy should ever get close enough to deal you any kind of melee damage.

Like other people have said, if you also use Sneak and snipe them from distance then you can one-shot just about everything in the game. The base damage increases given by the first Perk in the Archery tree are only a shadow of the horrendous damage that you can do with a bow.

Toss in Smithing perks to increase the quality of your bow and you can really decimate your foes.

I saw a video of a guy one-shotting a dragon with a heavily enchanted, heavily smithed, heavily posioned bow while sneaking. Best freaking video i think I've ever seen.

(Don't mind me saying "freaking", I don't like to swear.)

BTW Adoring Mudcrab, sorry about earlier. I'm in a bad mood today.

I think you should limit how many videos you watch or it might slightly kill your own immersion factor and not feel as real to you because it's taking more than one of your arrows to kill anything. Also, I'm an archer for this play through and I'm pretty big on the Unrelenting Force shouts and Whirlwind Sprint shout. You can push them away or distance yourself before you let more arrows loose. Hope it helps.

there is a way to get more perks per level but it means missing out on perks for teh previous level

you can save teh perks for later when you want to use them (you could be like level 81 and never invent in perks at all and have 81 perks available at once)
