Fire Mage fire balls

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:58 pm

last night I ran across a wizzard in a castle that herled fire balls at me. Even with my health up and Sven's up too, he managed to kill us both.

Minor
Spoiler

Only when I restored and let him take pot shots at Sven while I got him with arrows did I finally beat him to a pulp with a great sword.

I can't seem to find those fire balls in the wiki. They rocked my world.
Can a player learn that trick? What's their official name?

My flame's not that strong. It would be fun to use that against a bear or a bandit.
Also how can I get my flame stronger. I'm playing as a Nord but I'm tinkering in magic, while on my way to see the greybeards.

If a moderator would move this to the hints and spoilers section I'd be grateful.
Thank you, sorry.

I would think you are applying to the fireball spell. standard stats: 50 damage at 15 feet, i think. You can in the destruction skilltree level up your fire/frost/shock magic up to a total of 50% more damage.

Destruction has a number of downsides at higher levels, specifically you seem to run out of magicka a lot quicker than enemy mages, whose supply can seem limitless. If you want stronger spells, you need to buy better tomes, available from court wizards or the College of Winterhold, and will need to invest in the destruction damage perks. Even then, destruction can be underpowered unless you wear magicka cost reduction apparel, and/or have a supply of fortify destruction potions.

But I'll try to help you in some way. If you want:
Spoiler
College of Winterhold is the school for Mages or anyone who want to focus on magic.
As you join the college, you may get to learn a new spell right away (if your lucky) it's random what spells you get to learn.
Also, you have trainers there that focus in Destruction, Alteration, etc that will sell you the books to learn new spells.
Or you can go to any Jarls in citys like Whiterun and Riften, there you may find a Wizard that sell spell books as well.

not necessarily true, bilal can cast expert lvl destruction spells such as lightningbolt and it only takes 19 of his mana

edit- but this IS with all my enchanted gear on

If the "fireball" just hit you or Sven then it was probably Firebolt, I think. Depends on your level. If it exploded and hit both of you then it was probably Fireball. You can get these spells but they only become available for purchase if your Destruction skill is high enough. At least from Fireball on up, you can get firebolt early in the game.

It's a balancing act. Loads of threads on destruction being underpowered compared to smithed up melee and archery, but 100% reduction and dual impact makes a mockery of any single enemy, to the point where it may cease to be fun. Find what works for you.

It seems to me that enemy mages magic is stronger then ours...krosis rocked me with that fireball staff yet it tickles anything i use it on thats bigger then a wolf. I wonder does master difficulty make their spells and staffs stronger, me weaker, or both?

Both, of course. You deal out half the damage and take twice damage at master level compared to adept. It's a good idea to buff up magic resistance and elemental resistance.

Haggar, the more you use it the better it gets. I found the true fireball. I think I bought it from a court wizzard but at the start it barely killed a wolf. Now I can use it on bears and saber cats. Last night I took out an Ork with it in one shot. WOW! Better then a bow.

Darn Sven keeps getting between me and the bad guys. More then once he got an arrow in the back.
Better then an arrow in the knee i suppose...

Keep using it. Practice on Deer and small animals. You'll level it up in no time.

NPC mages have access to different spells than the player character. You can see this if you are on PC; use the console command 'psb' and you will receive all of the spells in the game. There are numerous versions of each spell; some do a TON of damage for very little mana.

I posted a thread a while back about an encounter with a Bandit Marauder mage that was FAR tougher than my fights with Morokei and an Arch Cryomancer shortly thereafter.

Spells don't level with you like 1h/2h/archery does. Only through perks and alchemy can you strengthen destruction spells. :)

Are you sure truz11? The reason I'm asking is:
Spoiler

I was hunting deer last night with my new fire balls and the screen said something about destruction leveling. I wasn't sure until I saw that.
it's the same message you get when you sneak a lot and the sneak increases. Not a level up.
not really a spoiler but I was discussing the game mechanics.

Any caster with the prefix of "Arch" makes me want to cry on Master difficulty.
