Smithing Commisions

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 2:28 pm

I had this idea since before Skyrim came out, but i think now i know how the game mechanics work it would work better than i originally imagined..

If our character has a certain level of Smithing, they should get letters from couriers now and then, saying someone in a high role (a Jarl or something, or a Military Leader) has asked us to smith a weapon or armour... saying something like

"Dear [Name]

[NPC] has heard of your talents,

[NPC] wishes to commission your skills and requests [Weapon/ArmorPiece/ArmourSet]

Upon delivery you will be payed a sum of [example] gold."

Depending on your skill, you would be requested to make anything from Steel to Dragon (i cant imagine many Jarls or Military leaders wanting iron)

And also depending on your skill you may be asked to make anything from a single armour piece or weapon to a whole armour set, maybe complete with a weapon also...

I think this way people would have more reason to use Smithing and it gives more chance to get your smithing skill up rather than boosting. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a nice idea. i would love it if we got extra gold for improving the item and/or enchanting the item as well.

I like this idea. I know we can always sell our wares, but i like the idea of specialist requests.

I would love this mod, especially if I'm playing a character that lives primarily in Hjerim. The modded version of it I use has a complete smithing workshop at the front entrance, and since I almost always level up in smithing I pretend that it's my own little blacksmith's shop where I make and improve things to sell when I'm not out adventuring and saving the world and whatnot. It would be cool to get actual customers, lol.

Wondering how you would work out delivery, would it be a named NPC from the game and then you take it to them? Could be tricky it the request is randomly generated to be from someone who is already dead. Jarls would all be fine except for Ulfric depending on what you've done in the CW quests, even all the stewards and housecarls stay alive IIRC (aside from Galmar). Best to keep it to those NPCs who are permanently essential and never gonna disappear from your game and then send you a commission from beyond the grave. :P

Can't you just get a mod that gives you your very own smithy, rather than squatting in someone else's and pretending you own it? :)

What part of my post didn't you understand?

The smithy was modded into Hjerim. I own Hjerim, therefore I own the smithy. I can pretend I have a blacksmith's shop because the location of the modded smithy makes it immediately accessible from the street, just like a merchant has their store in the front room of the building that they own and in which they also live. Because of that, I think it would be fun to have an actual customer once in a while.

They send Hired Thugs to teach you a lesson. Pretty obvious, really. :P

It certainly would be nice and realistic. The weapons I make are of a far better quality than the stuff any of the Blacksmiths in Skyrim sell.

I would like to see warriors challenge you to one on one combat as well, considering mages get their wizard duels.

I love that idea. In fact I wish it were that way with all the crafting skills.

That duel happened to me once, and I was quite shocked because I had no idea such things could happen. Sadly, the guards didn't like him so they killed him...

I agree, I want more random encounters, they are awesome!

Sadly in my game stray magic bolts from the attacker killed old Skaggi Scar-Face (I liked him) as well as another innocent young miner woman. I knew what was happening as I'd already read about the said occurence, but I still didn't expect it as magic was by no means my strong point.

I gave him as true a Nordic burial as was possible with the resources I had, I dumped him in the river next to Left Hand Mine and watched him float off the waterfall.

I think it would be the kind of thing you would have to do yourself. What I mean is, instead of a courier comeing up to you with a letter, you would have to seek out the Jarl, and there would be a dialoug option saying "Is there anything I can do for you m'lord" And then he would commission a peice of armour for you to make.

Good idea, nice to see an original, unique idea posted (not just something that was done in Morrowind, lol).

I thought there would have been something like this for hunting, i.e. radiant reiment owner needs x number of deer hides or snow bear pelts.

"Dear [NPC],

Gold literally grows on trees in Skyrim, and therefore [Name] will be adventuring instead."

Wish they could come up with other rewards.... :P

I think we should have to pay blacksmiths to make our items and it should not be instantaneous crafted , makes no sense that 3 days after walking out of helgen I can smith legendary deadric weapons while eorland grey mane has tended the forge for years and can only smith vastly inferor steel items. Its simply way too easy to get amazing gear in this game.

And low level smithers could be contracted to improve weaponry from guards and merchants, and get paid a small sum.

I say why stop at smithing. They should do something like this for all skills. Even speech. I would just like any kind of reason to feel there is a need to max out a skill. Most of the 100perks are garbage.
