Morrowind. But I love Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim the way you might love three very different children for their interesting and wonderful idiosyncracies.

Morrowind. I've gone back and played Daggerfall too, that was p.fun. I played Oblivion and did not like it for how shallow it is. Skyrim is even more shallow and barely qualifies as an RPG but it's pretty at least.

Daggerfall but my experience is probably very different from other people since I actually played Daggerfall without any background music. All that time I thought Daggerfall was like that but when I saw a YouTube video of it I noticed for the first time that Daggerfall did had background music!!, lol. I guess I had some sort of sound card incompatibility since it was a DOS game.

Morrowind...which I suspect is the most popular answer. It was a real groundbreaker in my eyes...first night I played it I was dreaming about hiding out and watching that stump to wait and see someone come hide goodies in there ;)

Unfortunately I have since tried to go back and play it again, but it's just not the same now.

Redguard. Yes, I'm one of the 5 people who can answer this.

Although Morrowind was my first of the traditional series.

In this order:
Oblivion---> Morrowind---> Skyrim.

Playing Morrowind after Oblivion was a treat. TES:III is a deeper, darker game. I missed Oblivion's lush, green worldspace but the depth more than makes up for it. Skyrim is a bit like TES:III-Lite, in many ways... minus the journal, paper-doll, character creation, etc. The emphasis on the Dwemer and being "The Chosen One" is very similar, though.

There's a poll http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1343332-skyrim-community-poll-updated-february-2012/ that covers this question if you didn't see it.

FYI mine was Arena in 1994, although I must admit that the cover art on the box almost put me off buying it. I'm just glad the back of the box looked more interesting and swayed me to get it. :)

Ha... indeed I do. You're the first person to ever comment on my avatar - and correctly place it. :) I'm not ashamed about being an older gamer, so yeah, why hide it.

Arena. Though to be honest, it made little impact on me. Daggerfall was a great improvement, but three that really standout are Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, each with their own positives and negatives, each offering great gameplay. And among these three, Oblivion really requires a lot of mods to achieve its possibilities, in my opinion.
