Why not throw in the oblivion map?

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 10:50 pm

It seems wasteful to me that every time we get a new Elder scrolls game it throws out all the work of the previous game. Why not throw in the Oblivion Map in Skyrim. You can remove the things that don't go with the current lore but a lot of the dungeons and stuff could be reused (and hooked into the radiant quest stuff)

This would double the size of the game with less work than building a whole new province.

I could even go with it as an unofficial "tweak" so you don't even have to clean it up to match lore.

What do you mean? Like recreate Cyrodiil?

It's a lot harder than that. There's file types to worry about, connections between objects and worldspaces that don't work the same way (if at all) in the new engine, and all sorts of other problems that would get in the way.

Because rebuilding a game and shoving it in a new one with a new engine and replacing all the voicework/character models/etc is so easy...

:stare:

Plus how would you account for that storywise? Since Cyrodiil in the time of Oblivion is 200 years behind Skyrim...

Has Duke Nukem not taught people anything... When upgrading engines, devs spend more time making everything work together than they do actually working on the game...

That might have worked between Morrowind and Oblivion but between Oblivion and Skyrim Bethesda implemented a completely new pathfinding system, scripting language and tree-generation system. Meaning that even if the lower quality assets and dungeon layouts could be ported all interactions inside the dungeons would be completely broken, the overworld would be devoid of trees and many other unappealing things.

I kind of see what you mean.

Since I bought both Skyrim and Oblivion, why not load up Oblivion when i reach skyrim's southern border? Probably not so easy technically.

Probably not, but I already own the client that runs Oblivion so I would be fine if it swapped out the clients behind the scenes (or heck, even if I had to do it manually). You would just need to rip out the character system (which a lot of mods diid as well) and replace it with Skyrim's. Still not easy I guess but I like larger game worlds.

It's really not that easy, plus it's been 200 years since oblivion

Yeah, and fit that on a disc that the Xbox can handle? And as others said before, it really isn't that easy.

They did put in Cyrodil or at least part of it. There's videos out there on YouTube of people clipping outside Skyrim and going into a low-res version of Cyrodil. I think, and I'm just speculating here, that they're going to use it as part of a DLC involving a resumption of hostilities between the Aldmeri Dominion and the Empire. After all, why do all that work of putting the province in but not use it? That and some of the comments that Tullius, Ulfric, and Ondolemar make seem to point in that direction. Foreshadowing FTW!

That is a bit big for just a DLC I think. It is more likely just to have something to look at from ,for example, High Hrothgar, and not just a pure empty space.

It would be a ton of work to make this happen. However I still feel it would be awesome if I could visit areas from past games. I would like to see the empire invade skyrime or skyrime invade Cyrodil.
