The Dwemer (Dwarves). How did they disappear?

Post » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:24 pm

It's nearly always said to have been mysterious, Some writings say they disappeared after a battle with Nerevar just before he died. Some book of which I don't remember the title also said how (hypothesis only) but we still don't know.

Should this be a separate game or some kind of DLC?

P.S. Discuss about the Dwemer disappearance too, please.

This would be better suited in the "TES lore" section of the forums

They were their own undoing. It was briefly explained in Morrowind and there is a quest in Skyrim where you can infer what happened. Besides, the ambiguity of them makes them so cool and interesting. We don't need a full game explaining them.

Don't really need a DLC either. But I do love exploring ancient dwemer cities, so I wouldn't mind.

You should ask in the lore forum but there are various theories such like they become the skin of Numidium and thus ascended to Aetherius.

They turned into a Giant Robot, in an attempt to become a God..

It didn't work out.

The one with Arniel at the college. He tries to redo the experiment that caused the Dwemer to become the skin of the Numidium.

I don't recall where but I do remember hearing something about the Dwemer shunning the Daedra to such an extent that it was to the Daedra the highest form of an insult because they believed in science/magic and didn't see a reason to even acknowledge or even show the Daedra any respect that the Daedra laid a plan to wipe them out for their insolence.

Wait, Is it the one that make him disappear after you complete that quest?

Yes. He uses

Heart of Lorkhan
. This is what the ancient dwemer did, however they had much more tools and were able to basically wipe out their entire race, rather than Arniel, who

Hopefully those spoiler tags work. Hard doing it on iPhone.

Alright, so most of us know that they dissapeared because they were trying to use the heart of lorkhan to become gods. If you're asking exactly HOW it happened then that involves a lot of deep philosophical and metaphysical aspects of the TES universe. Put simply though, they tried to reverse a natural metaphysical process. (The divine turning into the profane) The issue was that reversing this process defies the natural laws of the universe (the profane turning into the divine) so they had to use a device / power that could defy the basic order of existence (Numidium, lorkhan's heart, CHIM) The end result was, hopefully, to create a god that would make them gods (once again I'm simplifying this). The issue was that the chief architect of the project, Kagrenac, was so obssessed with making his people reach godhood that he ignored some possible errors in his calculations. The result was that the dwemer were all unmade when the ritual was being performed. It's likely that they zero-summed, literally being removed from existence. Not living, not dead, just gone. Their conscienceness was gone, but their energies were absorbed to power Numidium. So, in a way, the numidium = the last remains of the dwemer.

Sorry if that was confusing, or if I made any errors, but that's basically what happened to the dwemer. Michael Kirkbride, the guy who basically wrote this backstory, said that he wants them to always he a mystery, so it's likely we'll never fully understand.

If you really want to know here's a theory that seems reasonable enough, at least to me.

I dont think their intention was to have anything to do with the aedra or the daedra. According to Michael Kirkbride in an interview "There's no word for the dwemer's views on divinity. They were atheists in a world where gods exist". They were either trying to become gods themselves using the heart and CHIM powered numidium, or they themselves were trying to achieve CHIM (which is, in a way beyond, godhood) but instead zero-summed. Either way, the dwemer don't exist anymore, with the exception of Yagrim Bagarn on Vvardenfell. Their minds were removed from existence, and their residual energies are the "skin" of the Anumidium.

I will give you a very short-hand version.

They tried to unmake themselves, but became the Golden Skin of a Giant Stompy Robot.
